Good for the Isles, and probably VERY good for him.
I do think he was overreaching least year (one of those magical seasons), but I thought the same about Burrows 2 years ago, too

that makes no sense.

- decent money across the term
- NYI gets a cap-bump (ie helps them reach the floor) for the next couple of years
- He could become pretty attractive trade bait in the last two years for a cash-rich/cap-poor team

that garth... always thinking outside the snowglobe.

the contract is basically telling Grabner "we believe in you" where 2 other teams havent ... they think he will be a future consistent top line producer and as he progresses they will pay him accordingly

something for Grabner to work for because imo he needs that type of carrot ... a 5 year deal with 3 million paid across the board and you would probably have seen him get fat and sassy

Wonder how many teams want a do over on Grabner considering every one could have had him for next to nothing.

I jsut dont see why it needs to elevate like that. why not flat fee across the board. it just has no sense other than to think Wang will sell teh team before he reaches $5M so he can then NOT pay him that salary and drop it on a new owner. which makes sense I guess. that team is strange

any discrepancy between cap number and salary is an advantage to someone.
ie.. helps the Isles hit the cap floor now; would be a great asset to a team tight to the cap later.

This is a solid move for the Isles. Aside from the fact that they signed a good player, it may influence others to resign. If they can manage to keep some in house talent then the team may seem more appealing to free agents.

the cap hit is nice for a 40 goal scorer.

Yeah I think it's 10 or 11 more years.:L Yashin's cap hit went down to 2.25 million or something like that. It's a 2.5 million decrease for the remainder of the contract. Of course the Yashin buyout will be on the books until at least 2015.:frusty:

Yea but you still have plenty of money to spend and with a good young group of players.

True. Grabner's cap hit is 3 million every year for the duration of the contract regardless of what he takes home. It's essentially a 5 year 15 million dollar deal. They just structured it differently.

The Rangers have themselves a very talented young core with some good players on the way as well. Kreider will be a very good goal scorer in the NHL. One player to keep your eye on is Christian Thomas. He was a 2nd round pick last year who plays for Oshawa in the OHL.
