Good/great forgotten players of yesteryear

Melvin Mora's another guy that didn't reach the majors until he was 27, but managed to put together a very solid career. Career line of .277/.350/.431 (105 OPS+) and 28.2 WAR. He had a really good year in 2004 when he batted .340/.419/.562 with 27 home runs, 104 RBI and finished top 5 in OPS+ and WAR. His teammates Brian Roberts and Javy Lopez were pretty good too.

Yeah Melvin Mora had some good years. Looking at his minor league numbers I can't help but speculate........

shit happens. Look at Justin Turner's pre-Dodgers career. He has a 138 OPS+ since joining the Dodgers. John Valentin's another guy that hit rather poorly in the minors (.245/.334/.366), but was a good MLB hitter (.279/.360/.454 and had a four year span where he hit .303/.384/.492). You can't always scout on a player's minor league stats.

Baseball's a weird sport.

The 1960's Giants had a few forgotten gems. Ed Bailey and Tom Haller were two good hitting catchers and the Giants were lucky to have both for several years. They combined for 35+ home runs in 1962 and 1963. Jim Ray Hart (JR_Hart, where art thou???) was also a very good player for a while before falling off a cliff. Also had two of the Alou brothers (Matty and Jesus).

He gets lost among the Cobb/Ruth/Gehrig, another old timer that doesn't get the respect he deserves is Roger Hornsby. If I had an all time fantasy draft ... he going #1

Some good players in the 70s you hardly ever hear about (thanks OOTP):

George Scott: played for Boston, Milwaukee and others.

Steve Rogers. Pitcher for the Expos. Five time All-Star. Led the NL in shutouts twice. Finished in the top 5 in Cy Young voting three different times.

I finally found the Roberto Hernandez bar and was excited because I heard it had a unique taste. Sadly it tasted exactly like the Fausto Carmona bar.....

Placido Polanco quietly put together a very good career. Career .297/.343/.397 (95 OPS+) hitter while playing great defense at 2B/3B. Finished with over 40 WAR. He also hit .331/.383/.447 (120 OPS+) with the Phillies and Tigers in 2005 and .341/.388/.458 with the Tigers in 2007.

And speaking of the 2007 Tigers, they had some other really good players.

Magglio Ordonez: .363/.434/.595, 169 wRC+, 8 WAR (An MVP-caliber season unfortunately overshadowed by a historically good A-Rod season)
Curtis Granderson: .302/.361/.552, 136 wRC+, 7.9 WAR (another guy who somewhat quietly put together a very good career)
Carlos Guillen: .296/.357/.502, 120 wRC+, 3.3 WAR (a shame he couldn't stay healthy, because he was a great offensive SS for a while)

Even Gary Sheffield had a nice little age 38 season (.265/.378/.462 and a 123 wRC+). Too bad their pitching outside of Verlander sucked ass.

Tim Salmon's one that comes to mind...not a very long career (about 10 full seasons) but had 299 HR, 1000+ RBI, 128 OPS+ and 40 WAR.

Bret Saberhagen, I think people may remember the name, but would be surprised by his numbers if they looked at them.
