Another McRae related story that I remember from Whitey was that he thought that if Amos Otis hadn't gotten injured in the middle the ALCS Chris Chambliss's famous series winning HR off of Littell may have been caught. RF Al Cowens was moved to CF and the shorter and weaker fielding McRae (Whitey said the reach difference was probably 6 inches) was forced to take his place in RF. Hal leapt as high as he could for the ball but just missed it.

I still think Eric Davis is the most naturally talented baseball player I've ever seen.

The Hitman from Cleveland Mike Easler.

When he finally got a chance to play all he did was hit.

A's had a few good ones

Lansford, Steinbach, Hindu. They were all rock solid. One Flap Down Leonard for the Giants.

While volatile and often drunk or high while pitching, Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd is one I'll always remember from the 80's.

Lew Burdette. Won 3 games in 1957 World Series. In a 6 year span, 1956-1961, he never won fewer tha 17 games and had over 100 CG. He was also the starter and winner of Harvey Haddix's 12 inning perfect game. He "scattered" 12 hits over 13 innings.

Traded for Johnny Sain as I recall. I had a book called "100 Greatest Pitchers" in the bathroom as a young kid that taught me all about Lew.

This is a team stat but I have to bring it up. The Milwaukee Braves never had a losing season in 13 years.

I remember I had a "What would you do?" type of book with manager decisions and that one was in there. There was also the Bob Robertson "bunt" (when he actually missed the sign and hit a HR), getting Gene Tenace in the lineup for Epstein in the '72 WS, shuffling guys around and getting Sandy Amoros into the outfield to get the Bums a series win in '55 and a bunch of others. Great bathroom book for a kid.

I'm starting to worry about your fixation with bathrooms and young kids

Haha all my best baseball reading happened there! Those big fantasy stat guides and the Bill James books were great for that too. You can't read more than a few pages of a long novel while taking a shit but you can read some player entries or prospect reports and walk away from there with some knowledge

I'm a pretty big reader (mainly novels) but I never read while taking a shit. I'm usually too preoccupied with the dame that's blowing me.

That being said, I have read Bill James Baseball Almanac front to back numerous times. It's pretty amazing and really makes you appreciate him as a historian first and foremost before you even consider the statistician aspect.

.356 60 HRs 165 RBIs 29 2B 8 3B
.356 6 HRs 64 RBIs 36 2B 23 3B
.337 8 HRs 108 RBIs 47 2B 9 3B

Top guy Babe Ruth 1927
and the his 2 other OF, Earle Combs and Bob Meusel.

Not a bad outfield
Wow, those three stat lines are amazing. Mainly because they all hit over .330 with similar double and triple numbers, but Ruth hit 60 home runs while Combs and Meusel hit 6 and 8

In some states now "she" won't have to use the same bathroom as you anymore, I hope that doesn't ruin your game

I haven't read anything by Bill in a while, I should revisit some of it. I'll probably take a shit at my parents' place this Christmas so that's both an opportunity and a good way to avoid talking to my dad

Yeah I haven't read James' book since I was like 17. Like I said, I don't read baseball books much anymore, but that was my favorite in my teenage years.

Currently reading Kerouac's On the Road.

As a general rule, about 80% of my posts on this forum will either be either drenched in sarcasm or outright false/bullshit.

I was hoping (and sensing) that! But I already liked you so I wanted to make sure.

Coincidentally I haven't read that since I was 17  My term paper for English my senior year was about "Junky" and "Speed" (William Burroughs Sr. and Jr.). I don't think my teacher knew what the hell she was supposed to think about what I'd written and sometimes that's an easy way to get an A

I wasn't saying that the other guys were Ruthian but they formed a helluva outfield. Combs is also in the HOF.

Chris Sabo was good for like a second in the late 80's or early 90's. I loved those glasses he wore. He looked like an 8th grader taking metal shop.
