Man, it's really hard to change your swing after you've been doing it for awhile.

and I thought I was frustrated BEFORE the lessons...

Hear that and I'm thinking about getting another lesson.

What changes are you trying to make?

The coach changed everything, from set-up, to grip, shoulder turn (more steep), and hand path...I got most of that down but occasionally forget something...now I need to start the downswing with a hip bump to start transferring the weight to the ball of my lead foot and shallow out the club...that is not going well..at all.

There are teachers who want to totally remake you in their image and there are teachers who will go with minor tweaks to help you.
I prefer the latter.

All of that in one lesson?

Holy crap, that is a lot.

All sounds legit, though. Stuff I need to be doing.

when I saw what my swing had morphed into over the years, there was nothing for him to work with. He also looked at physical attributes...my right shoulder mobility, how my hips move, etc, and then tries to build a swing around those limitations.

Everything but the shoulder turn and hip bump were done at the swing analysis, the turn and bump were the first lesson.

I pull my short irons sometimes.
Me too, but it's obviously less penal with them than the woods, where I get in trouble.

Especially if you've been playing for a long time. Your swing is going to be too ingrained to change it completely unless you're willing to put a lot of time and effort into it and really work at it. Better to find a pro who can work with what you have.

I made two changes this year that has resulted in shaving off 5-7 strokes per round. I wish i had learned them 20 years ago. I am now regurlary shooting 82-85 with 5 rounds in the high 70's.

First one is i bought a chipper club. I used to use a seven or 9 iron or a wedge to chip those 5-10 yarders from off the green without much luck. Sometimes i would chip one close, but not consistently and I would still occasionally skull them over the green or hit it fat and come up way short. This chipper changed everything. You just use a putting motion and it pops the ball up a foot or two and its not too hard to adjust to the feel of how hard to swing it. I'm now chipping to 6 feet and closer pretty consistently and giving myself way more legitamite one putt opportunities.

The second change was trusting that swinging steeper with a fairway wood on a long par 4 or par 5 will get the ball up in the air with some oomphh, instead of trying to scoop the ball which would result in topping the ball and hitting worm burners.

Anyway, those are just two changes that really helped me. Feel free to pass along any other tips anybody might have.

Walking away for a while might help. I've taken a bunch of lessons and they've helped but I always fucked it up by trying to get longer when my game was fine and started over-swinging. Broke my collarbone and didn't swing a club for over a year and it actually fixed a lot of problems. Swinging a club felt awkward so I forced myself to do all the things I learned in the lessons and the contact was a lot better. It's shorter but it's consistent and I'm scoring lower. Playing smart and to your game helps a lot too. Who gives a crap if you hit it far but you put yourself at a yardage you don't have a club for.

That does seem like too much change at once.

the "One Piece Takeaway" drill

I haven't golfed in a long time; I picked up this drill when I was playing regularly. It's really easy - you don't need any equipment.
This is the "right-handed" drill. It's actually much easier to show people this drill than it is to write it all down.

- Stand with your feet spread at a comfortable distance and your arms relaxed at your sides.
- Once you get "settled", Don't move your feet.
- Have someone tap you on your right shoulder. (or pretend, if nobody is there to that for you)
- Turn your head/shoulders around to look at the "tapper".
- Repeat this until you get a good idea as to how far you can turn while maintaining your balance.
- Now, do the same thing, only keep your head steady looking forward while you turn your shoulders/arms.

That's it. All that's left is to put a club in your hands and a ball on the ground and repeat the same thing. :)

I know that I hit my best shots with my feet planted firmly. I start missing the ball when I let my feet roll or lift so that's ^^^^ good advice in my book.
