This is why the Goldwater Inst. lawsuit is so misguided. They claim to be protecting the taxpayer, but the investment into the arena has already been made. It makes zero economic sense to remove the anchor tenant from the arena for the local taxpayer.

I am still holding the situation that it is a moot point, since there are rumors that a) there is a buyer of the bonds, and b) the lawsuit will fail on the precedent of public support for other professional sports in the area (Suns, Cards, and Diamondbacks all receive or received public funding). But still.

one rumour says it is the NHL

Exactly...it's bad enough that the integrity of the league is tarnished because they 'run them', but for this to all be happening during the playoffs is even more worrisome.

I think you are all WAY WAY overreacting. The league is not going to rig games to help the team. I think people are setting themselves up for excuses.

And its MY favorite team that has the best chance of playing them in the PO's of the fans of the teams commenting here.

I saw a video of a Canadian sport channel analyst saying there was a buyer. Not sure who the guy was or what his credibility or source is, but he made it sound like a private buyer and not the league.

Its all speculation for us, though.

If anybody (investor that is) has any sense, they will stay far away from those bonds. I'd like to know what the rating agencies rate these bonds as, and how much the city officials bribed to get that rating. If these bonds are rated anything higher than B/B, I would be suspicious.

I really don't believe that statement...however, there are people who will (particularly when a situation arises that may be questionable like a goal call from Toronto) and that makes the league look silly. I'm just not a fan of them owning the team and can't wait til this debacle is over one way or another. I know the chances of foul play occurring are slim to none, but it's still not good that these questions can be brought up.

How about this?

Yotes to Kansas City (spanky brand new arena)
Thrashers to the 'Peg

Understood and its far from an ideal situation, but it still is pretty conspiratorial to accuse the NHL of cheating on the Coyotes behalf as if Bettman and co are playing goal with a mechanical Bryzgalof

Id say Islanders before Thrashers. The NYC area does not need 3 teams withing 30 miles or so.

Id say wait until the Trashers at least win a playoff game before talking relocation. That market has not had much of a chance.

I could support Florida to Seattle or Milwaukee (arena pending)

The Islanders lease doesn't run out until after the 2015 season. By then a decsion on Brooklyn or Queens will be made.

Chance or chances?!? Atlanta Flames came in with the Isles in '73 and were gone 8 years later (didn't win a single playoff series). The Thrashers have lost 130 million over the last five years according to court documents. How many days did Thrash the mascot have to spend in jail before 5,000 tickets were sold?

It's time to pull the plug on Atlanta.

A lot of talk going around is that the reason Bettman is so resistant to the Coyotes moving to Winnipeg is that's where he would like the Thrashers to end up should that fall through. His holy trinity if you will looks like keeping Phoenix with a team, giving Winnipeg back it's team and finally getting rid of Atlanta.

A nice little inside info from a Coyotes player: http://www.calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/2011/04/01/17836536.html

lol at Belanger ... he wouldnt by chance be from the province of Quebec now would he?

he's also thoroughly educated himself by saying Quebecs economy is really rolling along (lol)

in the words of Glenn Healy ... "if you choose to play in a city because of the weather ... youre a loser"

The latest bit of Phoenix Coyotes/Winnipeg intrigue: There's a 50/50 chance of the team staying in Glendale next season, and the NHL "was considering buying some of the bonds to help keep the team in the desert. Whether other NHL owners would go along with further league financing of the Coyotes is another question." Good lord
