The following is a statement from the Phoenix Coyotes in response to Glendale City Council’s vote tonight to support the new Jobing.com Arena lease agreement with Matthew Hulsizer.

“The Phoenix Coyotes are very pleased that Glendale City Council voted this evening to support the new Jobing.com Arena lease agreement between Matthew Hulsizer and the City of Glendale.

This vote is another step towards securing our future in Glendale and we remain optimistic that a deal will be finalized soon.

The Coyotes would like to thank Glendale Mayor Scruggs, City Manager Ed Beasley and City Council for their commitment to the Coyotes and all the great hockey fans in the Valley of the Sun for their continued support and patience throughout this process

How about some of these great hockey fans in the Valley of the Sun start parking their butts in many of the available seats at Jobing.com arena?

It will be interesting to see if the Goldwater Institute raises a stink about this lease, obviously I don't know much about Arizona politics, but I seem to recall reading that they don't like public monies going to support a private enterprise like the Coyotes.

As mentioned above, the fight may not be over yet...The lawyers are getting paid (as always)

The next battle over the future of the Phoenix Coyotes could be fought in an Arizona courtroom.

The Goldwater Institute, a public watchdog organization, says a proposed arena lease between the City of Glendale and incoming Coyotes owner Matt Hulsizer may contravene an Arizona law which prevents politicians from paying more than fair market value to a private business.

It is good in the fact that if this deal comes to fruition, the league is no longer owning the Coyotes. That's never a good situation. I think hockey fans in the Phoenix area should be happy about this deal (and it provides Canadian snowbirds an opportunity to watch NHL hockey), however if I were a resident of Glendale (i.e. a Glendale taxpayer), I'm not sure how pleased I would be about this deal.

I can't stand to see such a decent up and coming team get the cold shoulder from their fans. I wish Winnipeg would get a team, but if this owner is willing to lose millions of dollars a year because he thinks hockey can work in Arizona hey go for it I guess. At least guys like Doan don't have to worry about if the team is going to move or not. I remember an interview where he said he and his family was stressed because his kids really really didn't want to move. Guess they really love Arizona.

I just don't think the business model works for Winnipeg anymore, when the salary cap was at $39 million coming out of the lockout, sure, no problem, but now they're thinking the cap might be over $62 million after this season. That coupled with the MTS Centre seating just over 15,000 people is quite the double whammy. Add in not very much corporate support and it's going to be very tough to have a competitive team (i.e. spending close to the cap) in Winnipeg.

Yeah, Bettman did a hell of a job using Winnipeg as leverage and the Glendale City Council folded like a cheap card table. Say what you will about Gary (and I'm using first in line), but when he sets his mind to something, he usually ends up winning.

agreed!

what is the cap floor on a $62 mill cap ceiling

quick math: 15015 capacity x $51.51 average NHL ticket price x 41 reg season games = 31.7 mill from gate revenue if they sell out every game ... what other revenue streams are there in Winnipeg? There are only so many bags of "Morris Luko-chips" you can sell
