Any chance this kid could be a starter? I do not know much about him.

Zemgus Girgensons made it pretty clear at the NHL Draft in Pittsburgh that he expected to attend the University of Vermont this fall after a strong career with Dubuque of the United States Hockey League. Then he came to Sabres development camp and was one of the standout players. The 18-year-old had what he called the toughest decision of his life to make but how tough could it have been.

Girgensons called UVM coach Kevin Sneddon late Thursday night and the Sabres officially announced today that the Latvian center taken 14th overall has signed a three-year, entry-level contract (terms undisclosed).

Well, I'm pretty dialed in to the Latvian Junior circuit, Boss, so let me... uh, wait. No I'm not.

But I hope he turns out well for ya. :thumb:

On a related note, not sure why some guys go to college to play, can make more money and learn faster by joining the pro squad or the AHL affiliate. I'm all for education, but nothing saying you can't go to college when you're 24 or 31 or 48 or whenever. Giving up a couple million to attend school seems crazy by comparison.

I know a couple of posters follow the hockey circuit over there so I was just curious to see if anyone had any inside info on him.

Also agree 100% if a player looks like he has the potential to be a decent player he should go for the money. Shit ,if he goes back to college and blows his knee out he could be out millions of bucks.

I watched him at the WJHC Boss and he could probably compete for a spot right away. He's supposed to already be a fitness freak/gym rat.

The best thing for his development, IMO, is that he goes the college route and develops his offensive skills and instincts. As it stands right now I'd say those are his shortcomings. I don't think he'd develop thoase attirbutes as well just surviving as a 4th liner in the NHL.

Good point, Thanks Kenny.

No worries Boss.

The kid will be NHL player. IMO, he'll have a long NHL career as a 3rd to 2nd liner. Not sure he'll ever be a true first line center, but he looks as well rounded as they come.

Signing means the kid either makes the Sabres or plays in the CHL because he's too young to play in the AHL.

Every player is different. College didn't hurt Toews, Parise, Doughty, Suter, Kessler, Oshie, Stastny & many, many others.

what i dont understand is the guys picking their 'education', when the chances that they actually play 4 years (or even 3ish and graduate early) are very slim.. sure your education increases over that time span, but the proof of your education (degree) will never come with these players (prior to their hockey career at least)
