I like Slater (I know you don't) but at this point, his chances of being a Giant in 2025 are slim. This is his walk year and he is having the worst season of his career.
They've been very patient with this guy and have waited a long time for him to become more than just a backup. Its time to cut him loose so he can try for a fresh start elsewhere

Disagree. I think they've seen him as nothing more than a 4th outfielder from the very beginning and didn't give him real shots at regular time in the lineup. By measure of OPS+, he's been above average every year from 2020 to 2023. His year has been his worst in the big leagues since debuting in 2017.

It just seems odd that a guy like him would be the longest tenured Giant

It should be pointed out that Slater's on base abilities are still good. He came into today with a .344 on base percentage. That is .001 under his career average. His slugging, however, has cratered. Going into today, it was at .247, much lower than his .393 career average. I do wonder if he is dealing with some injury he won't tell them about.

There was no reason for them to get rid of him. Probably (until this year) one of the best 4th outfielders in the league.
Boy, do we disagree on that one.

Name 2 4th outfielders you think have had a better 4 year stretch since 2020 than Slater.
I don't pay much attention to 4th outfielders so I'll take your word but if he is the best 4th outfielder in the league, that position needs a lot of work.

Just curious, what is your beef with him, outside of his 2024 production?

Strikes out a lot, doesn't hit for average, doesn't hit for power. Never gets a big hit. He's a career .254 hitter with only 39 homeruns in 8 years. has only played in over 100 games twice in 8 years and in 1300 career at bats he has struck out a whopping 438 times

Interesting. I don't think he was ever seen as a power threat type hitter but the strikeouts are annoying. However, he gets on base a lot and is a smart baserunner. He's 47 for 54 in stolen bases for his career. The number of games played is out his hands. He doesn't get to write the lineup cards.

You are discussing this with someone who doesn’t know a damned thing about baseball. You probably know this

Just because WE don’t know about it doesn’t mean THEY don’t know about it.

4th OFer means there are 3 better OFers on the team. We are not talking about all-star quality players here.

If he played better he would play more

I agree. Slater certainly fits that description. I don't really see what so many people see in him.

No one here sees him anything more than that. You are the one straw-manning that he should be viewed against a higher bar than that.

I don't even know what that means. I simply said I don't know what the Giants see in such a mediocre player to keep him around so long.
