I am a professional bodybuilder and lifestyle/fitness coach. Holy shit on god's green earth, do I wish it was humanly possible to "gain muscle at an equal or greater rate" while losing body fat. Gaining simply a few pounds of muscle takes a VERY long time and unless you are a beginner to resistance training - you're not going to "gain" while in a caloric deficit. While not explicitly stating he lost weight, losing body fat would suggest he did unless he gained muscle at an equal or greater rate. It might not have been 35 lbs, but it’s probably a lot more than an average person could lose in that time frame.
I’ve made a transformation like that before and I lost 35 lbs in about the same time and felt the same way.
