Bochy has an announcement to make re: Zito, but he needs to talk to BZ first...

sounds ominous...

Surgery Tuesday for Sanchez, he’s out for year; decision forthcoming on Zito | Extra Baggs

Ominous? For Zito, yes. But for the Giants and Giant fans, sounds waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue.

Zack Wheeler gave up three runs in the first inning of his debut with the Class A St. Lucie Mets, but has settled down a bit since. Allowed 4 runs through 4.

Does that compare to a 1 for 14 start by Ryan Shea Beltran?

1 - 14 in the major leagues for a contending team that made the trade for "now"...

vs...

4 runs in 4 IP in A ball for a 21 yo prospect.

Hmmmm that's a close one...

I think they'll give Zito a choice: accept assignment to Fresno or be DFA'd.

Giants rank 22nd in walks, and 28th in OBP, 29th in runs, and 24th in home runs.

At what point do we decide it is the talent, and at what point do we decide it is the coaching?

Granted, the two best hitters (Franchez and Posey) have been out for much of the season now, and their contributions would have helped. This seems to be an ongoing issue with Giants' hitters.

The Reds' series was an aberration, but it seemed like the Reds were working the count, and the Giants were swinging way too often early in the count.

I am not a fan of the see it and hit it approach, but perhaps this should be tailored to each type of hitter? As much as it drives me nuts, Panda seems to do well swinging early in the count. PTB seems to thrive just waiting on pitches.

I have been thinking about this the last few days...

It is quite accepted that the Giants have a philosophy with pitching and preferring to give up a big walk than a big HR. Maybe they have a similar philosophy when it comes to attacking pitches early in counts.

I can not fathom why an organization would instill this at every level (Brown has been accused of being a free-swinger as well), but the whole "feel free to walk a hitter" approach is quite unorthodox as well.

Let's hope.

Why does this situation remind me of a scene from the movie Major League?

Update on Barry Zito: He was heading into a meeting with Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean as reporters were told to exit the clubhouse. But Janie McCauley of the Associated Press ran into Bochy after the brief confab and AP is reporting that Zito is going on the DL with an undisclosed injury. No official announcement from the club yet, but that is expected during, or more likely, after the game.

Zito was available to the media before the meeting and didn’t know what was going to happen. But he didn’t say he was hurt. — Carl Steward

Wait.....I thought Giants pitchers were supposed to give up 3 runs in the first?

I think the first two stats can be functions of the last stat. When you have no power a pitcher will go after you in a neutral situation.
