It could be such a better sport if they just tweaked a few rules to enhance scoring, IMHO:

1) Increase the size of the goal - like 1 meter wider or 1/2 meter taller
2) Limit the area where the goalkeeper can use his hands to the goal area only, not the penalty area
3) Loosen the offsides rule, or even eliminate it altogether
4) Play with 10 or even 9 players, instead of 11.

Deciding critical games by a shootout is like deciding the World Series with a home run derby contest, or deciding the NBA finals with a game of H-O-R-S-E.

Or, one could argue, like deciding an NFL game with a kicking contest or an NHL game with a shootout...hey, wait....

LOL! Very true. But at least the NFL "kicking contest" is in the context of "real" game play. It's not like kicking the best of 5 field goals from 50 yards out. The college football OT rule where they alternate possessions from the 25 yard line is mind-numbingly stupid.

The NHL shootouts are no different than soccer - artificial, absurd, bogus, and wholly unsatisfying. In a word, disgraceful.

Might as well have a striptease contest to decide the winner.
