I think Blanco needs to do much more to match Towers. I consider 2010 as part of the results from that dumpster-dive.

However, player to player, so far, Blanco is a no-brainer.

I actually EXPECT Blanco to do more. He was a known prospect coming up with Atlanta, so he has some pedigree. He also is younger than Andy was when he came on board. Blanco could become a VERY legit MLBer, while Torres was always viewed as a fluke.

This. In a discussion like this, it gets dicey to pick and choose your variables. When deciding which player you're happy your team has/had, age is a huge variable. I don't expect Blanco to play as well as he has played for the next 7 years, but it would at least be more possible than 2010 Torres doing it.

That was the first perfect game that I've ever watched live, from beginning to end. Given that it was the first by a Giant, that makes sense. However, it is still really cool. Around the top of the 4th, my wife and I were supposed to go run errands and clean the house. She looked at the line score and asked, "Does Cain have any walks?... Stay here. Can you do the dishes between innings?"

That's love.

Kinda reminds me of a story from back when I was living in Florida...

I was living with my GF at the time, and it was VERY rare that I had the opportunity to watch a Giants game.

I was relaxing at home watching a Saturday game of the Week with the Giants, and she came into the fam room and wanted "some attention". I looked at her, looked at the TV, and got a bit pouty since I had to choose. She immediately noticed my dilemma and walked out of the room. She came back with an opened beer, handed it to me, got on her knees and said, "Enjoy your game honey..."

My jaw dropped to the floor.

One of the GREATEST stories of my life, and I told her that on NUMEROUS occasions.

Well, the original question was Towers 2009 or Shark 2012, right? As a player to player for a career, I would agree Shark has a higher upside, due to his being younger, and not having some of the issues Towers had with focus.

That said, it is simply too early in the season to compare the two seasons. The 2009 Towers was a phenomenal player. An aberration? Yup, but one of those that happens in baseball. For all the Shark is doing with this club right now, he has a long way to go to match what Towers did in 2009. But I am liking what I am seeing.

I remember in ST there was talk about whether he would even make the team. He forced his way onto the team. I wish he AB would run him more, though. The other day he scored from 1st on a single. (albeit he was running on the pitch and was almost to 2nd anyway) That is legendary speed.

Nope. OP must have meant 2010 Torres because in 2009, Andres had 170 PAs. Ironically, his OPS was .876 in that few of plate appearances. Blanco's is .828 in 187 PAs. For 2010 (570 PAs), Torres had an OPS of .823. If Gregor miraculously keeps pace, he will not only have had a very similar year to Torres, but have done it at 4 years younger. Scales tipped.

Oops, you are correct, it was the 2010 version of Towers. Mea culpa. :L

I loved the expression on Greg White's face when he got up and showed the ball. He was so proud - but for Cain and the team, not for himself. And Cain's tip of the cap back to White was so cool. He has been criticized for not tipping his cap to the crowd, but he made up for all that by tipping his cap to the guy who saved history.

Somewhat unsung also was the play Arias made in the eighth on the charged grounder. That was a major league play in a huge situation. SOOOO glad he kept his balance on the final out.

Any chance Nate runs that down? I doubt it.

Maybe not, but he would have thrown him out at first base, before the runner got there.

I did not specify. I was simply asking who the better dumpster dive was.

Earlier this week I was thinking to myself about how much Blanco 2012 mirrors Torres from 2010. Torres wasn't guaranteed to even make the team, started off as the 4th/5th OF at the start of 2010, didn't play much at the outset, and due to the ineptitude of others he got some playing time and then he won his spot as the everyday CF due to his outstanding play. Sounds exactly like Blanco 2012.

They both play good D have good speed, some pop, both came off the scrap heap... Their seasons are eerily similar if you ask me. Too early to tell who the better dumpster dive was but it's looking pretty even at this point. I hope Blanco 2012 plays out like Torres 2010. :clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:

Actually Rowand was doing pretty well but got hurt, Torres stepped in and the rest was a ring.

Same thing happened with Wellenmeyer getting hurt, Bum comes up.

I said this in 2011, injuries are usually the main story of success or failure over a long season. In 2010 the injuries we had HELPED us. In 2011, not so much.

So far in 2012 we've stayed pretty lucky on injuries, with Panda the only major one and we didn't miss a beat thanks to Melky.

You could almost say Cain's game Wednesday was 'perfect'

It is a sad commentary on the state of television when the best thing to watch last night was a replay of the perfect game.......

then again.......

maybe it is a sad commentary on my life when I watch the entire replay acting as if I didn't know what the outcome would be (even tried to make a bet with my son in the 7th inning on whether Blanco would get to that sure double to the gap)...

either way it was a great game to watch again.....

I watched bits of it. At one point I wondered if Kuiper regretted some of the shtick he used in the broadcast. Thankfully, by the 6th inning they played it straight. Really missed Kruk's analysis and commentary on the broadcast.

How much hazing do you think Kruk is getting from the guys behind the scene for missing this game? Yesterday, Kuip made a few subdued jabs directed to him on the air...

At least one person had to have told him to feel free to take yesterday off. :couch2:

A lot. I heard Kruk texted, "I hope you all die," immediately after the game. But I think they really feel for him, so, of course, they have to ride him about it.
