I didn't get the impression that she'd lost her power.

And I didn't get the impression that the necklace was what gave her the illusion though I know that's the conclusion the interwebs drew and it made sense. That's an interesting point that she's been without it before.

The sandsnakes scenes felt entirely rushed, but I was ok with basically everything else in the episode. The ending with Mel was pretty neat.

I'm bummed they outted Doran and Areo so cheaply. In the books Doran is a schemer playing the long game and is kind of a badass...guess that's not the route the shows going, but I'm cool with it since they are secondary characters at best.
I had high hopes for Doran in the book.

The rushed aspect I spoke of wasn't so much about the episode as it was me being used to viewing it with the book as a backdrop and knowing the little things. I didn't like just being a "viewer". It's not as good of an experience as the books. But it will do. Fuck GRRM in the face.

The final scene was kinda strange/confusing as it implied Melisandre's necklace was magical and kept her looking youthful... but... in previous seasons, we have seen her naked/without the necklace:

Is this a simple production continuity error, or is something else going on?

Hmmm.

I think the choker was definitely part of her power, keeping her looking youthful. But it's not the only way she can do it. The scene from the picture was the only other time we've seen it off her. In that scene, she is explaining to Selyse that she has many different potions for many different things, including one that makes men desire her. In last night's scene, in the shot of her taking off the choker, they also focused in on some potions around her table, maybe implying she still uses them? That was my thought process.

There's also a theory going around that the scene in the bath tub she actually isn't using any tricks and Selyse CAN see the true form, which would explain why Selyse looks really put off the entire time. I don't necessarily subscribe to this, but it is interesting to watch that scene again with that in mind.

Selyse already had numerous reasons to be put off. Melisandre was a threat to their marriage, and the only way she could cope was by rationalizing that it was all for serving the Lord of Light.

And assuming she hasn't lost any power, how much power does she really have?

It was nonetheless a good WTF moment to end the show.

If you watch the scene again just before she removes the necklace, notice the special effects glow emanating from the necklace. This clearly indicates the necklace is special/magical. So.... I'm guessing her powers are a combination of things.... potions AND the necklace. I'm also guessing that an important component of some of her potions is royal blood.... so now that Stannis is dead, she is conserving/rationing her potions??

And Faith. She has completely lost her faith and is probably just in a weak state of mind and power. The fact that she's at the Wall is probably the only thing keeping her upright at this point.

The ruby in the necklace glows when she wears it. It's part of the glamor that disguises her true form (ancient woman) and instead shows her attractive younger self.

The significance of the scene is to drive home Mel's sudden self doubt. Through the entire series up till now, she's had unwavering confidence both in her visions and Stannis. But, with his defeat that all came crashing down. Now she's this ancient old hag who's likely near the end of her life and no longer sure of what to believe in.

She didn't lose power, she just lost confidence.

In the books she uses glamours to change the appearances of Mance Rayder and Rattleshirt. Rattleshirt then dies in Mance's place. The glamours take the form of small trinkets, usually stones.

This incident lead many to theorize that Melisandre is using a glamour on herself and that was basically confirmed in last night's episode. If her necklace is the glamour, then yeah it's a continuity error.

She's written in the books as an open question too. She has some form of real power, as shown in birthing the shade that slew Renly. But she's also someone who relies on parlour tricks to influence and awe and control (flash powders, etc)

It's definitely a low magic world, with hints of a change in that status (the end of the age of dragons)

GRRM has always taken pains to have religious power be ambiguous as well.

So I too took that scene as her own doubts, fears, and simple exhaustion played out.

So if she's going to SLEEP, then she wouldn't be able to control her illusions.

(In a deep narrator's voice) Ironically, wildturkey hasn't seen the latest episode and doesn't know about the red woman.

He was still on the boat.

This does appear to be the case. Why he was chilling out on the boat, why we didn't get some scene with Jaime confronting him about Myrcella, and how the Sand Snakes got there undetected is still a mystery. Again, maybe they explain it but I have a feeling they won't.
