Was this the play they scored on? If so, it could have made a difference. On that play, Gruden was screaming for a time out. Half our team didn't even move on the snap as they thought a time out had been called.

NFL admits Washington was wrongly penalized for 12 on the field

Not saying we'd have won the game, but this penalty came at a critical juncture of the game. It again raises the larger issue of why NFL refs continue to get calls wrong.

Because if you are the Packers, Giants, Patriots, and a select few other teams.... you get more benefit of the doubt than a Kennedy in a money laundering trial. It is what it is, the "elite" get the benefit of the doubt. Every one else has not earned that yet. Same reason why GB gets to score on an illegal shift five minutes later.

But hey shit happens.. on to the draft.

Side note, personally think the only time 12 men on the field should be called is if the 12th man is actually lined up to take the snap and play defense/offense. If the ball is snapped and a guy is running off the field, it has no more bearing on the play than if guys are switching lines in Hockey and two guys hit the ice before the other two get over the wall. Most likely they are out of position to affect the play in any case and its just a freeby for the offense.

I agree. Hey, the rules take into account things like an uncatchable pass for PI purposes. I'm still wondering about that PI call we got, but don't think I can take off my burgundy and gold glasses for that call.

That would be a good rule to implement. If a player is showing intent SOLELY to leave the field he should not count as being in play.

Doubt they will ever make that change though as it would negate the advantage guys like Rogers and teams like Philly got from the hurry up.

Agree, but if the teams who don't rely on the hurry up can argue it will cut injuries it might fly. Dallas never catches defenses with 12 on the field and Jerry is on the rules committee, so there is a chance. Unlikely, but would be a fair rule.

We just need it to happen to the Giants. Mara will get the rule changed.

God, don't mention John Mara's name here. He's the SOB that stabbed us in the back for that $36M cap penalty. I get irate even when hearing his niece's name (the actress Rooney Mara).

I would propose refs being able to make judgment calls as to whether or not they could pick up the flag for (certain) certain penalties if they decided that the penalty didn't have anything to do with the outcome of the play. As just noted, they do it for things like PI and uncatchable balls. Why not for more penalties?

Not to broaden the issue, but I'd make every penalty reviewable.

Reviewing every penalty would probably make games go 4+ hours. Here on the west coast not to bad but I'll feel sorry for those watching MNF in the Atlantic time zone.

No, I'd limit the number of challenges to three, but I'd propose that more penalties / plays be reviewable (e.g., PI or whether PI should've been called).

I would prefer they start fining Ref game checks for fucked up calls that directly affect the outcome or momentum of the game. IF a Ref loses three Checks in a season, bench his ass. Bet they would pay more attention then and be less likely to just toss a flag because, hey it looked like that guy hit one of the protected ones in a questionable manor.

Refs are human. They make mistakes but I do think when it comes to calls/non calls, they should be reviewable or at least coaches should be able to challenge flags. Indeed there are too many games decided by the refs.

I can't recall a time when I've seen so many blown calls, and ones that came at such critical times in a game. I'm not sure if this has to do with the fact that refs aren't full-time employees, but something has to change. I mean, how many times does the NFL have to apologize for a blown call? I'll give the NFL this much: at least they're up front with their mistakes.

Yeah and its not been just this year. Seems like the last few years it has gotten worse with this season being the worst. I understand people make mistakes but everything is there to fix some of them.
