I'll try to find video of it later...

Kesler takes a shot, bounces high off of Budaj.
The puck comes down right behind Budaj's head, as Tambellini takes a swipe at it.
Tamby hits Budaj in the face, which makes Budaj snap his head back, which in turn bumps the puck and propels it into the net.

the irony... if Tambellini had hit the puck, not the goalie's skull, it may have been no goal due to a high stick.

Noticed Kesler is on pace for a 40 goal season. Pretty damn good for a Selke candidate.

best I can find for now. they showed an angle later on in the broadcast where you could see the head snap back to send the puck backwards.
the best view here is at about 1:05

So that's a bullshit goal, right? Cuz I think smacking the goalie in the head with your stick is a penalty.

I gotta agree. I know you're allowed to follow through with your shot, but I don't think they had something like this in mind. At the very least that should be goalie interference. Sorry guys, but IMO that goal should not have counted. I'd be pissed if a goal was scored like that against the Sharks.

I think if he whacked the goalie in the head you would see some very pissed off Avalanche players. .. and Budaj acting like he got killed.

Good call. The high stick didn't make contact with the goalie or the puck. Tambellini's stick is actually behind Budaj's head. It can be seen at the 1:05 mark.

on the game broadcast , they had the overhead camera view and you could clearly see Tamby made contact with Budajs mask

edit: the linked video in this thread is edited at 1:33 because the entire review went over 3:30 mins

yeah, that was the missing angle i was hoping to find.
stick-to-head-to-puck looked like one of those desk ornament thingies with the silver balls on a wire.

I must say I woulda been pissed if that was scored against my team. It turned out to be the GWG too.

However, the issue of a high stick penalty (or goalie interference) is not a reviewable play.
they can ONLY review if the puck contacted a high stick, was kicked, went in off of a glove, or crossed the line.

the ref really shat the bed on that play

he missed the high stick
and he thought the high stick contacted the puck

and he was right there ... I dont think he could have been any closer to the play ... Ill give him that he probably had a bad angle

as a goalie I get whacked in the face all the time and never get the call. refs always see it as follow through on the puck

I stand corrected. The stick did hit the goalie's mask. This is from TSN:

Budaj's bid to stop the puck knocked it high in the air and Kelser's linemate Jeff Tambellini swiped at it when it came down.

A video review confirmed Tambellini didn't touch the puck with a high stick.

"It's not that big a deal," said Kesler who signed a US$30-million, six-year contract extension last season where he had a 25-goal, 75-point campaign.

"Obviously it's a nice milestone. It's all from hard work. Our line's been working hard and it's good to get a greasy one like that."

Tambellini, playing his first game since being recalled from the AHL Manitoba Moose, said he knew he hit something hard as he swooped by the net.

"I wasn't sure whether it was the puck," Tambellini said. "I figured it out it was his head. I wasn't sure what happened, it happened so fast."

Budaj, who replaced Craig Anderson after the first period when the starter injured his groin, thought Tambellini hit his mask.

"The puck went in, he never touched it," Budaj said. "It's just a tough way to get scored on."
