I'm assuming that changing teams and systems will impact a player at the beginning of the season, right?

They're both good players -- I think they'll turn it around.

Or maybe Cincinnati creates system players like New England does now, and that Collins lining up besides Whitworth at LG sure didn't hurt. Just a thought.

I'm sure it didn't suck for MJ to be on one of the best DL's in the NFL, either.

Both are good players, but when you are on a good team, it makes sense that you will play a bit better by default. Matchups are different when you have good players around you, and things that MJ could do here, he's not going to be able to do in Tampa just because of the matchup issues.

I don't blame either for leaving, but the doom and gloom over the OL/DL lines losing each player was laugable.

my frustration was that they really didn't implement a plan to replace Collins effectively, essentially belaying it until next season. I understand the business of letting Collins go to a team willing to pay more for him.

fortunately the OL seems to be doing pretty good and Whitworth is holding up so far.

I disagree..... And I certainly don't think it's laughable. We've played three games..... Hardly a big enough sample to suggest we didn't need these players.

There's also the tiny issue about both tackles having expiring contracts after next season.

The reaction on this board was laughable. It was high comedy how some were reacting. You'd have thought Anthony Munoz in his prime were walking away, and that we lost Reggie White at DE.

The chicken little mentality on this board runs rampant.

I think one can disagree with the Bengals without claiming the sky is falling. I've applauded many of our offseason moves and I have no issue with the way that we approach free agency. I had an issue with Marvin Lewis' insistence that we 'sign our own' and then letting the three FAs with value leave the building. It was particularly hard to take given that we could have squeezed at least one or two of them under the cap.

I think they will have a plan. They know how important this OL is to the success of not only our running game but also the protection of Dalton.

I imagine they will resign one of the tackles and draft one next year in preparation. We may even already have the answer.

Sign Whitworth if he can stay healthy the next two years, and let Collins walk and replace him with Newhouse. I am interested to see how Hawkinson progresses over the next couple years too. It isn't like there are not options.

It will be interesting to see what they do. Whitworth is going to be moving to the back-end of his career. Maybe he'll do a team friendly deal and stick around. I think Tits would have left last time his deal was up if he had more options. But they are going to have to draft or develop a young guy.

BTW -- Wasn't Newhouse one of the worst tackles in the league? Or am I thinking of someone else?

I have no idea to be honest with you, but he has looked pretty decent in our blocking scheme. I like what I saw out of him in preseason, and he has taken a few regular season snaps with little to no issue during those plays I think.

We will have to see as the season wears on, as he may very not be the answer leaving us looking at a new kid from the draft, a mid-level tackle in FA, Hawkinson starts improving each year, etc.

We will have to see how things plan out. Their first priority seems to be signing the fan favorites and heart of this team, Dalton, Green, Dunlap, Atkins, Burfict. So as long as the contracts revolve around these guys getting paid, they will keep their own. If it means they are going to have an issue say signing Green due to available money, we may have to lose a player or two to ensure we get Green long term.

The 'system' defensive end Michael Johnson had a big play today.

It was Pittsburgh. Everyone has a good day on the defensive line going against Pittsburgh's oline.

You're right. I forgot about all those times we've beat their ass. How many in a row is it for us now?

Yes, Newhouse was awful last year. Pretty sure he always was. The Packers let him go which says a lot in that regard. Hopefully we have a plan to keep the line intact which doesn't involve starting this joker.

What does a DE sacking a QB, who holds the ball too long, and an oline that can't block have to do with us beating them?

Sacking a QB and poor pass blocking oline does not equate to a loss for Pittsburgh. Actually, more often than not, they still win.

I am not saying we are a dominate force going to just own anyone. I am just saying that I am not surprised Johnson's best game this year (so far), as a DE, was going to come against Pittsburgh.

Mike was a good DE for us. He now plays in a different uniform. It's time to move on.

I couldn't agree more.

I wonder how long it will be before there are stickied threads up for them like Palmer has?
