Is this a way to weaken the case that athletes are employees of the university and therefore eligible for unionization and profit sharing. It's interesting that the big 10 brought this proposal since it was Northwestern that brought up the one on unionization. By claiming this is an effort to help them as students, it helps the argument that they are students first, and athletes second.

Overall I think this won't work. Especially in basketball. Most of the top kids are freshmen. Imagine if this was past this last year. ND would have no players to play. They would have to up scholarships.

Until 1970 freshman couldn't play .. things changed when Marshall lost its football team in a plane crash. . Might make things more interesting that's for sure

Yes, I remember when freshmen could not play. But with the concerns about paying the players, and players forming unions, and the various lawsuits being aimed at the colleges and the NCAA there seems to be a renewed focus by the schools to show that the players are students first and then athletes, and not primarily athletes. By restricting freshmen from playing, it would be hard for the players to state that the school was merely using them to generate revenue, which would weaken their cases looking for money from their schools or the NCAA. If a conference did it, it would have to be across the board, no single conference could make a rule change regarding eligibility without putting its schools at a huge disadvantage.

It would be easier for college to just make it a rule that players remain in college for 2 years instead of making Freshman ineligible.... That just means these players will just go pro instead of college.

Unless the NBA agrees to that it would be a useless rule though, that's an issue.

What percentage of freshman actually go pro though? It doesn't make sense to punish everyone because a few high profile freshman leave early.

It wasn't the NCAA that made that rule, it was the nba. Just like the nfl made the rule about waiting until the third year out of college. If the NCAA did make this a rule, it would also mean that the colleges would also have to honor the scholarship for 2 years. I think a lot of schools would have a problem with even just a two year guaranteed scholarship.

It only works if every conference adopts it.

No way could the B1G recruit against a conference where the coach says you earn it you get to play your freshmen year.

IMO it would improve the sports quality but create more guys leaving with eligibility remaining.
