Well if you don't like what the Nfl did you could just quit supporting/watching all together

That's always the option of every fan isn't it? And if the side shows become bigger than the game I think you'll see the NFL's popularity start to decline. The last thing we need is for the league to become WWE with all the ridiculous antics. But thanks for pointing out that option for us Red, we probably wouldn't have thought of it ourselves.....:L

Now if this guy was a huge star then it wouldn't be such a distraction because he would be benefiting the team significantly and there would be more for everybody to gain. But a marginal player just isn't looked at like that. If he doesn't do much for the team (which you can't expect a late draft pick to do) and in addition provides a distraction, well, let's just compare apples to apples and keep it in context.

So what you are saying is that if Robert Quinn came out tomorrow, it would NOT be a distraction?? You are foolish. I am not saying that it will not be a distraction. But it is not a distraction for us, that is my point. It is going to be up to the players to make it NOT a distraction. Your beliefs and opinions will not matter in the locker room. Are you saying you are no longer going to watch the Rams since they drafted Michael??

I'm saying that if there is more to gain, the players and team will be willing to tolerate more. But we're not talking about Quinn here. The whole point of this thread was that this pick was motivated by politics and not ability of the player. You seem to have taken it away from that point.

I disagree with you... Fisher made it clear that he someone was that on their board. Also if you were watching the NFL network coverage, they were in the Rams War Room and if you watched closely right before the call got made, Fisher looked at Snead and said "I WANT SAM" and not because he wanted to date him. It is obvious that your opinion of this and the coaching staff and front office of the actual team are VERY different, but that is ok.

retro, I literally watched every minute of draft coverage either on NFL Network or ESPN and they had film crews filming at at least 2 dozen athletes. Do I think without the non football stuff that they would have been with Michael? No But do not act as if they picked him out special to broadcast. Hell, I forget who it was but they sat with a player during the 3rd round on Friday after he got the call and filmed him crying for over 5 minutes...
You guys are making things out of things that are not there... and it saddens me

Well, I think that ESPN did make him out to be a special case and conspired with Sam and his bf to act the way they did. I have no doubt that cake scenario was pre-planned and that the camera crew, at least, was complicit. Combined with ESPN putting a camera in the gay bar in West Hollywood (did those guys look like flamers or what?), Sam ended up looking like a cartoonish stereotypical gay IMO, not the type of player the Rams should be looking for (and I didn't mind the pick when it was first made). I've had 3 gay housemates in my life, and none of them ever acted like Sam or the guys shown in the bar. I mean, really, stuffing cake in the bf's face, then putting some in his own mouth, then kissing him??? That was not needed as part of the draft coverage, to put it mildly, but I think ESPN and Sam planned it (& now regret it).

Not only am I a Midwesterner but I'm from STL and attend MU. The dude was the 4th best pass rusher on his college team last year and really isn't that good at all.

I'm not from Missouri, and know far more about Ohio St. and Kent St. football, than I do Mizzou. So you'll have to forgive me if I'm wrong here... but Michael Sam had 11.5 sacks and 19 TFL in 2013. The next guy in line Kony Ealy had 9.5 sacks/14.5 TFL. Then Markus Golden had 6.5 sacks/13 TFL.

Are there 3 other players I'm not aware of? Again... I'm not being facetious here. It is entirely possible I'm not aware of all the players, as I obviously don't follow Mizzou Football as closely as you do. I'm just going strictly off the stat sheet here.

If your statement is true, then I'd be inclined to wonder why they weren't drafted.

It's only obvious to you KSU. Apparently I'm not alone in my belief that this was "politically motivated" What exactly does Fisher proclaiming "I want Sam" have to do with anything? It's obvious he wanted Sam or they wouldn't have drafted him. The operative question remains; WHY they drafted him. That is the debate here, not THAT they drafted him. But you're entitled to your opinion and I'm also entitled to mine. I'd start to worry if everybody started agreeing with me.....would mean that I've become a liberal......

This is the last thing I am going to say about this:

Does anybody really care WHY Michael Sam was drafted? We can say the same thing for a different reason about Mo Alexander. At the end of the day, if MS comes out and busts his ass in camp and makes the team, are you going to stop watching the Rams because he is on the sidelines every Sunday? If you answer is yes, you need to move back to Pleasantville and go watch some other team. I want players on my team that will help them win games. I could give a crap if they are white, black, red, green, homosexual, bisexual, autosexual, muslim.christian,hindu,buddhist,jewish... IT DOES NOT MATTER. And the point about the distractions is not OUR point to make. We do NOT play for the team. To put it a different way, if it is a distraction to you being a fan then THAT is a YOU problem.

Ok, I am done. Sam may or may not make the final 53, but our draft as a whole netted us 3 more wins MINIMUM compared to last season...

I could care less what flavor this kid goes for. But I believe this knife cuts both ways. If he turns out to be a great player and a steal. Wonderful. But if anyone believes there will not be a media circus following this kid around everywhere. You have your head in the sand. How it plays out as far as distractions for team we shall see.

The original argument was WHY Sam was drafted, not the moral implications. And I continue to maintain that the reason was more political than business. As far as his lifestyle choice, I personally don't agree with it. But I also acknowledge that as long as personal choices don't hurt or affect others in a negative way, then we live in a free country that allows such things and that is a personal choice. But I also believe we all will answer to a higher authority in the end, but that is another discussion.

As far as rooting for a team regardless of what players are on the team, I'd also have to disagree with you there KSU. Let me ask you, what is the criteria for you to select a favorite team? If it doesn't matter what players are on the team, is it just laundry you're rooting for then? Maybe it's just the location you're currently in or just by happenstance were born in? Is it the color of the uniforms or the design of the helmets? So if the team was filled with murderers, child ******ers, and terrorists you'd root for them just because they wear a Rams helmet? Sorry, I just don't agree. If the whole team decided to convert to homosexuality after Sam joined the team and changed their name to the St. Louis Ewes you'd still be a fan? If they all decided to become radical Muslims and the lifestyle and beliefs that entails you would still be a fan rooting for them to succeed?

Be careful about making these "all-encompassing" remarks. If that is what you consider a great fan---blind loyalty regardless of the philosophy of the players or organization or what actions they employ......well, we can all draw our own conclusions.

I didn't read all 4 pages of this, but just quickly on Michael Sam:

Great pick, and steal in the 7th round. Sam is a speed rusher, they might even try to teach him to play OLB on passing downs in packages where he is blitzing (rumors are Clowney will be playing OLB - and tbh they are similar players) He had 11.5 sacks! Damn man, if he grabs 4 for us, he was worth the pick. There will be ZERO issues in the locker room... if there was going to be, he wouldn't have been picked.
He can play special teams and stuff while we work on his pass rushing skills, better then some of the picks we've made, and there was A LOT of early round picks of players who will be role players and not stars, and Sam can be one of those role players. I would love to have him be able to come in and give a break to Long/Quinn when needed. This will be a GOOD thing for us.

The fact that jeffcoat from Texas was there and we took Sam is unbelievable. To be honest, how in the world did he not get drafted??? Mark my words, Mack brown sucks as a coach and never gets the best out of his talent. Jeffcoat will be a major contributor to the Seahawks or whomever he goes to next. Fuckin politics...

I waited and now I will say it. Sam's life notion is what it is, I don't care really. The kiss and cake was stagged IMHO for ESPN. It is totally up to Sam to get the media out of the circus business with the Rams. He can shut the door by just saying no. I don't know which way he will go there. He could come in and be a good special teams player ( there have been lifelong ST players) and at some point spell some guys or not. I don't mind if it was political and the Rams are just giving him a chance as a 7th round pick. I just want honestly in the end when it comes to other players. If he can't contribute then don't cut someone else to save him. If that happens, the TEAM WILL BE LOSS. Don't keep him because he is gay, keep him if he REALLY helps the team win. That is all it is about or should be.

What in the hell do you say to a 7 year old when he watches this BS on national TV?? A man licking cake out of another mans mouth?? This whole thing ordeal makes me sick to my stomach. If they want to do that shit, they better prepare to face some repercussion. Whether or not anyone realizes it or not these guys are suppose to be role models. If you don't want me to bitch about it, then keep that shit off F^#%$#$in TV

Leonard Little kills a woman with his car, Michael Vick electrocutes dogs, Ray Rice drags his abused girlfriend through an Atlantic City casino, Aldon Smith hordes illegal firearms and makes false bomb threats, but NOW, because of two men kissing, we're supposed to "realize they're role models"? :laugh3: Yeah... okay.

Oh... and if anyone has problems explaining things to their children, they should probably be paying less time on ESPN and more time on parenting skills. Lol.

Wait... eating cake out of each other's mouth? What are you watching? Cause all I saw from Mike Sam was a small peck to his boyfriend in the most emotional moment in his life.... He told us he is gay, he's not a lair, he's not deceiving us... what do you want from him?
