The Gaetz thing is super weird, but I'm again uncomfortable speculating on homosexuality, especially when it's used as an insult.

But he's definitely hiding something, and it's absolutely gross to use the kid as a political prop.

(If he's telling something close to the truth, though, about "adopting" him, my bet is on it being a kid he had out of wedlock when he was very young, who came to live with him when he was 12. That would explain both why he felt emboldened to tell what would otherwise be an obvious lie--because there's a grain of truth to fall back on when he's called out--how he was able to "adopt" the kid despite the DUIs and such, and why he'd want to keep it a secret, since a kid out of wedlock likely wouldn't sit well with the Christian conservative portion of his base.)

Nor would (should) being gay and pedophilia.

His status as a person in a party that not just denies rights based on something a person cannot control but revels in it makes indications that he is denying rights to people like himself fair game. I don't feel like the speculation is being used as an insult in this case, but an indicator of horrendous hypocrisy. That's what he's being called out for.

That and his verifiable lies and flaunting this kid as a political prop. I don't care if he's gay. I care that if he is he has tried like hell to damage all the other gay people. I don't care if Lndsey Graham is gay. At this point I'd be shocked if he wasn't. But people have been severely damaged by his rhetoric which is inexcusable. If he's part of the community he is hurting for personal gain...

Inexcusable and I am OK with the fire of a thousand suns coming down on him.

That's all fine. Criticism for harm caused and hypocrisy, go for it. Jokes are wrong, using closeted gay people as a punchline is wrong. And I honestly don't think it's our place to speculate until they come out on their own--it promotes and preserves the hostile environment which makes people hide themselves in the first place.

Same with jokes about grooming. If he did that, he's a monster, but poking speculative fun at it minimizes the experience of victims, and that's also wrong.

Carnival to sell six cruise ships as bookings dry up

Can we start up a collection to buy one? I only need a couple thousand sq feet of it to make a BMX park. Near the ice rink, of course.

Seriously, though... who the fuck gonna buy six cruise ships?

I'll pitch in and will need the theater for my comedy stylings in my new 45-minute stage show called "hE loco." Here's a clip...
"So I guess that extra price for a balcony room ended up being worth it... ya know... since you're not as likely to die. You see, it's because of better air circulOOOOw, who threw that?!?!? You son of a..." (Clip edited for violence)

Seems like it's gonna be great.

I only know what it is because I watched Atlanta.

I have a feeling a lot of people had no idea what it was before recent events.

Same - I know it because Black-ish did an episode about it.
so in a sense he is right that more people know about it, but only because his government is so damned racist that it came to the forefront. So trying to take credit for educating the people on history is a bit tough to swallow.
happened to turn on CNN last night when three black dudes were discussing it, they were basically face-palming for 5 minutes before they could begin the segment.

I did not learn of it in school but I did shortly thereafter, I don't remember where. My wife knew a lot more about it as she is from Texas (3 count pause for laughter and or head shakes of derision) and it was a bigger event there.

I gotta go with D'stone on this tip. I kinda cringed a little at some of the Twitter responses implying he might be gay (or a *********). I understand what 43 is saying as well, but I think there's plenty to criticize him for in this situation (or just in fucking general because he's a total piece of shit) where he clearly either very much exaggerated or completely invented a father role with his "son" out of the blue... just for the sake of a political argument.

The really sad part is it's still irrelevant. Gaetz said in a Tweet:
"I was triggered when (to make an absurd debate point) a fellow congressman diminished the contributions of Republicans because we don't raise non-white kids."

Here is what Gaetz was responding to from Cedric Richmond of Louisiana:
"As a black male who went to a fifth best public high school in the country, who was a victim of excessive force, who has a black son, who has worries that you all don't, please do not come in this committee room and make a mockery of the pain that exists in my community. We're talking about black people in the streets that are getting killed, and if one of them happens to be your kid, I'm concerned about him too. And clearly, I'm more concerned about him than you are. So let's be clear about that."
  • So Richmond never said "you don't raise non-white kids," he said he has a black son.
  • He said he has experienced violence and worries for his son.
  • When he says you all don't, there are only two Republicans who are black in Congress at present so he is overwhelmingly correct at worst.
  • And he says he worries for your son too.
There's nothing for Gaetz to be upset about. He invented a ridiculous lie or exaggeration in response. That type of behavior is shitty and ridiculous. He shouldn't be a Congressman (for so many reasons). I don't care who he fucks as long as they are a consenting adult regardless of his (terrible) views on homosexuality.

I also wanted to add that I've been watching Tucker Carlson some lately (I think it's good to balance news sources, even ones i almost never agree with) and Gaetz has done something structurally here that Carlson and others on the right use all the time. It's not constructive, its manipulative, and it works so well on all those barely made it through high schools that support the right. Here's the breakdown:

(1) Capture some small element of the statement outside the central point
Richmond was relating his experiences and his concerns and wanted to focus on solving that problem. Gaetz instead seized on one phrase from a long statement that didn't related to the overall point.

(2) Exaggerate what the statement means.
Geatz then took the statement about being a father to a black son and made it a lithmus test for whether any Republicans raise black sons. It's not relevant

(3) Use that exaggeration to build false intent
Gaetz is implying Richmond is saying Republicans are bad intents. Human boat shoe Tucker Carlson is MUCH more overt about this part... "This is because they hate America." "This is because they want to take away your rights."

(4) Remind you why your fight against "the enemy" is so important.

The other side now represents evil and requires action and sometimes implied violence (Gaetz has overtly done this actually) to overcome them. We have seen armed men show up to solve outlandish conspiracy theories.

This is the formula. Distract from the point, exaggerate it, build an intent that isn't proven (and is often absurd), and make you angry. That's it. Lie to do it. Misinform to do it. Winning is important, problem solving is not.

The President did it just yesterday. Posted a video of two babies with a fake CNN headline saying a racist attack was involved to discredit CNN. Same thing. This is the behavior of Reddit trolls, not the leaders of our country.

It is dishonest. It is divisive. It is in politics too much overall, but has been the bedrock of Republican strategy for decades now, it's disgusting, and it's hurting America.
