Flyers Sign Carcillo to 1-Year Deal; Avoid Arbitration

He became known for his extracurricular antics just as much as he was for his gritty, pugnacious style of play. He accused Bruin Marc Savard of attempting to bite him in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, and was fined and suspended four games in December for knocking down Capital Matt Bradley.

However, he thrived under coach Peter Laviolette, and seemed to mature as the season progressed.

“There’s a lot of things that you can work on,” he said. “I just want to make sure that I am always in control, that when I get on the ice I can be effective. I want to put more points up and score more goals, and that’s something I’m going to focus on more this year. And hopefully, I can help the team more this year.”

He was, however, capable of showing finesse at times, a trait that was noticeable during the first-round series against the New Jersey Devils. Carcillo's overtime game-winner in Game 3 was one of the Flyers' most pivotal goals of the playoffs.

With the signing of Jody Shelley, a less-skilled yet similar enforcer type, it’s likely Carcillo’s role with the Flyers could become more offense-focused.

“I hope so,” Carcillo said. “You always want to try to contribute more offensively, and that’s something I tried to focus on this year. Hopefully I can put more in the net this year.

Acquired at the trade deadline in 2009 from Phoenix in exchange for Scottie Upshall, Carcillo completed the regular season with 22 points (12 goals) and 207 penalty minutes in 76 games, and tallied six points (two goals) and 24 penalty minutes in 17 postseason games.

His salary in 2009-10 was $937,500. However, the success he saw playing alongside Mike Richards – and witnessing the signing of Shelley for $3.3 million for three years – likely pushed him toward believing he deserved a raise.

Carcillo will become a restricted free agent at the close of next season. With the signing, the Flyers' 23-man roster is now $2.5 million over the salary cap, according to capgeek.com.

For what its worth, it looks like Carcillo is re-evaluating his role on the team.
