this is a tough game to take something out of. they were horrible then good then horrible again. i will try to list the positives and negatives.

positives:
richards is still awsome
pronger played well
briere had an end to end goal
leino looked good and just missed a tip in
after they came out slow they scored some goals and rebounded from a 2 goal deficit
the phantoms players played well
boucher played pretty well and just got no support
the briere line looked better once jvr got on the wing

negatives:
came out slow in multiple periods and especially overtime
timmonen and coburn were never around our net leaving a few bruins wide open. nbc can blame briere all they want although timmonen should have been there
giroux looked good although he can not play wing. that was our best line though
briere played ok although he can not play center
they need to clear the puck on the first or second chance. not the 10th
hartnell is useless although he got an assist. he also missed a great overtime chance
they are not generating enough offensive chances
we have 2 scoring lines and 2 lines that can not score
these injuries are taking a toll

i think the defensive lapses should stop although this was our same problem after the olympic break. i think the lines need to be switched up a lot although i am not sure if the richards line will be good without giroux although i want giroux at center. here are 2 possible combinations.

carcillo-richards-giroux

jvr-briere-leino

hartnell-powe-asham

ross-betts-nodl

carcillo-richards-leino

jvr-giroux-briere (i just really want to see this line)

hartnell-powe-asham

ross-betts-nodl

Great observations Scott.

I blame Lavy for not getting the boys wound up and ready for the drop of the puck in the first. It is ALWAYS the coaches responsibility to get his players ready from the first whistle and it was obvious, they weren't.

Having said that, he was ultra quick to see deficiencies in their play and made changes immediately instead of waiting to see things fall completely apart.

I really liked the lines and wouldn't change a thing either.

I see our boys coming out with fire in their eyes for game 2 and I firmly believe the outcome will be different and in our favor.

i would not blame laviolette. if your team can not get up for a playoff game there is something wrong with them. it is the coaches job to teach his system, make line changes, etc. and do not blame richards either. he leads by example and now has 11 points in 6 games. that is pretty insane. i do think laviolette should have used a timeout in overtime though.

Good posts, Scott and Tox. I think it's safe to say the Flyers and Bruins are fairly evenly matched. I was worried about how the Flyers would handle the Bergeron/Begin/Recchi line before the series started, and that worry seems to have been justified.

As poorly as they played in the first period, the Flyers had every chance of winning this game (i.e. Rask stoning Carcillo in OT). I like the heart they showed in coming back from 4-2. I don't think there's any question that the Flyers have no inentions of falling back on the injury excuse and feeling as though they've gone as far as they can. That's a credit to Laviolette.

Finally, JVR is going to break through at some point. The kid has been playing hard in all six playoff games so far.

I was just able to catch the OT of todays game....and all I can say is...wow....I can't remember the last time I saw a team jump on another team like that in OT...from the very start...I kept waiting for Philly to go the other way and get a trashy goal after the Bruins kept peppering Boucher but couldn't finish...

i agree. if i can feel optimistic about anything it is that they played horribly and only lost in overtime. leino hit the crossbar on a tip in also. hopefully jvr can get rolling. laviolette put him on a line with briere and leino and hopefully it stays that way. he did that before and then always put hartnell back by the next game.

The Briere line has to be broken up. When a rookie winger is the best defensive forward on a line, they're going to see a lot of rubber behind their goaltender, and that's what we saw today. I liked the offense they brought, but their defense far outweighed their offense. And for all the dekes and moves that Leino might be able to pull off, he just has no ability to score or set someone up. I can see why the Wings were so high on him, and I can see why they gave up on him. He's a Finn who can't finish! Get him off a scoring line. Switch Giroux & Briere and Asham & Leino. Leave Hartnell to wallow where he can't do anything to sabotage the team.

For how bad they looked in the first period and overtime, to play Boston pretty much even for 75 minutes shows you how good this team can be if they want to turn in a full effort.

I only caught the 3rd and OT and from what I saw....both teams looked ok other than OT. This is going to be a great series I think?
