That was pretty impressive stuff from Nurse, but it also highlights how bad asset management has been for the Oilers that he's forced to play that many minutes on back-to-back nights. I keep hearing from Oilers fans how great Evan Bouchard is going to be, well if he's so good, how come he can't crack the Oilers defense corps? Ethan Bear was stapled to the bench in favour of Kris Russell with your season on the line.

Up front, you have NHL/AHL tweeners like Josh Archibald (suspended for last night's game), Khaira, Devin Shore and guys who are in the twilight of their careers (Tyler Ennis, James Neal). This was the year for the Oilers to go all-in and instead Holland was passive at the trade deadline.

Obviously, you have to keep McDavid, but I would seriously look to moving Draisaitl. Also, are you going to bring back Mike Smith, he is 39 after all.

There are starting be rumblings of a contentious negotiation between Seth Jones and the Jackets, and rather than go through that all again, maybe we can move him. I would absolutely send him and Korpi to Edmonton for Drai. Then use some of our three draft picks on a D man. And drafting 5OA (without any lottery movement) we could have a choice of Edvinsson, Power or Clarke, so we might not even need to really worry about trading for a top D man.

Jones will get to be with his baby bro and him and Nurse can play 51 minutes a night together.

The only 90s NHL trope that has survived as long and is as implausibly stupid as "they told Yzerman to play defence" is "Mark Messier is the greatest leader of all time".

If you're going to have the Yzerman/Bowman "Play Defence More!" convo with Connor you had best be surrounding him with Lidstrom, Larry Murphy, Konstantinov, Federov, Shanny, Larionov etc. too because doing that is what made Yzerman look better defensively, not some stupid conversation with Bowman's fat ass.

1. Bouchard is not very good. Maybe he improves but I wasn't impressed during his draft year and I'm still not.

2. Ethan Bear >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kris Russell. Tippett is a nitwit.

3. Draisaitl is absolutely a keeper. That team just can't build anything around their two stars. Losing RNH probably won't help (although the $6M might be better spent elsewhere).

4. Mike Smith should only be kept as a backup/insurance. At most a platoon situation. This year was an anomaly. He's just about done.

You never win that trade and if you move him while getting less in return, or futures, why the hell is McDavid staying?

They have $22 mil in cap space (can be $25 mil if they buy out Neal, $28 mil if they buy out Koskinen; I think they should do both) but 14 roster spots to fill including some massive roles which is amplified when your roster is this thin. They have next to nothing to move in assets for trade. The UFA class is pretty small and their own UFA might be the best realistically available player anyway. Convincing guys to sign there will take an overpay and you can really only do that for one or two guys before you run out of money to fill out the roster and you're back where you started.

I said it Sunday and it's still the only logical solution - they should move both Draisaitl and McDavid for massive packages of assets, open up shop as a parking lot for unwanted contracts while teams are hamstrung by the flat cap and do the mother of all rebuilds. Not doing so is just delaying the inevitable.

I'd happily trade Jeff Skinner straight up for Draisaitl.

Huge benefit for the Oilers because they'd get another 40 goal scorer for an extra two years of term for *only* an extra half mil per year.

Questions of neck health aside, what a wild situation it would be if Edmonton marketed McDavid and Buffalo marketed Eichel in the same off-season.

Just went over their transactions the past two years and man Holland hasn't really done anything has he. His only trades of note really were Looch for Neal (meh), Marino to Pit for a pack of Sour Patch Kids (ouch) and giving up two 2nd's for AA (lol). His only signing worth a mention was Tyson Barrie who was literally at rock bottom after basically every single flaw in his game was exposed by the Leafs. He made the most uninspiring coaching hire in NHL history in Tippett. He didn't fix the goaltending. Maybe his picks pan out at some point but Bouchard's already been mentioned here and Broberg can't be less than 2 years from sniffing an NHL bench.

How do you go to McDavid two years after saying "give us two years" with that record to show for your efforts and make a convincing argument to not cut and run?

This isn’t really a defence of Edmonton because it’s true of stars on every team but fuck is it annoying.

Officiating continues to be a huge problem in the NHL. However, there was plenty of mauling of the Jets best players throughout this series as well. Not surprised that Oilers fans/media are upset, it's their favourite card to play.
