Is Flyers' Snider helping thaw NHL talks?

Joining forces...honestly though Snider has the most power of the owners. With some help he could change the entire lockout. In fact it was viewed he was sort of behind the owners tactics. That was my take at least.

Thanks pix interesting read. I wasn't aware of the fact that Snider and Jacobs didn't get along. Unfortunately what I take out of this article is this is going to be a long drawn out situation.

If the players know there are problems within the board of governors they may just sit tight and see if it implodes. :ohwell:

"When it comes to labor negotiations, league rules require a a vote of 75 percent of governors to oppose the commissioner's recommendation. That means Bettman has absolute power, so long as he has eight out of 30 owners to block any hostile movement against him. Bettman actually needs only seven owners to support him, since the league owns the Phoenix franchise."

They have too much power...and man is the whole owning a team messed up.

That's why when people say "Blame the owners, not Bettman" I simply can't agree. He sets the agenda, and only needs a small minority to support him.

Interesting quote from that article:

Put simply: Snider and the rest of the NHL's owners were promised a big win by Bettman, with player concessions on revenue division and contracting rights. The best they'll get now is a small win in revenue split - coupled with a demoralized fan base and all-important corporate sponsors that are ready to quit.

Interesting quote from that article:

Yeah that caught my eye too. This is such terrible timing for this. They were just getting rolling again the TV ratings were doing well they got a nice US TV contract and what do they do. Basically say fuck all that we are going to be a bunch of assholes and make the NHL look like a bush league.

Great work guy's ! It pisses me off that both sides never seem to mention the fans as a priority. It's all about me.

John Feinstein had some great perspective on that yesterday in an interview and I thought he put everything perfectly...

"I have been a Bettman defender... but jesus, the guy gets paid 5... million...dollars... a year. And what he gets paid $5 million a year for is not to slide out onto the ice and get booed when he hands out the Stanley Cup. What he is paid $5 million a year for is THIS... it's getting in a room with the owners and saying 'Fellas, this is what you pay me to do. We have got to come up with something that they are going to accept. We've already gotten concessions from them.' Remember, they started out offering 43% to the players ...The players have now come down to 50/50. That's a pretty good deal. They got their salary cap. They got their 24% rollback the last time they blew up a season. They've now got it down to 50/50 in revenues. They are arguing about things like how to pay off salaries they've ALREADY committed to PAYING! Bettman needs to DI his job to the owners and say 'this is the best we can get. Our revenues went from $2.1 billion to $3.3 billion - we're not doing badly here, fellas. Let's work this out and put hockey back on the ice." (a) Because it's good for us. And (b) Because - this is the thing that owners never understand, and I could go on a real rant on this, but I won't for the sake of your next break. Owners don't understand (Dan Snyder is the best example of this in the world) that when you buy a football team, a basketball team, a baseball team, a hockey team, there is a public trust involved. Becuase it is the public that allows you to operate. If the public doesn't buy tickets, if the public doesn't watch television enough to make it worth the network's while to pay you, if the public doesn't buy your gear and stuff... you...don't...have a business. So there is a public trust here and the NHL owners are totally blowing off their public trust by making hockey fans sit around and not have hockey. And it's a disgrace! An ABSOLUTE disgrace! Ted Leonsis, just like everyone else in hockey, should be ashamed of themselves. Somebody needs to stand up and say... 'this needs to be over... now!'

That's about 7.5 mill over what should be the cap for the commish's pay. IMO at least for him.

Except they....hired him, extended his contract and you can bet set his marching orders. No way he can oppose teh majority will of the owners. Sure he can but then he'd be out when his contract comes do
