I really don't get the hate for Jeter, and i'm a Yankees-Hater from way back. The guy has always been the consummate professional in my opinion.

Now, A-Rod is another story...

I love Nolan Ryan, but a lot of Nolan fans rank him higher than he should be ranked. I see the same with Jeter. I have no problem with Jeter on or off the field, I only participate in debates when it comes to ranking or talking about his greatness as a baseball player. A lot of fans use things like "the consummate professional" as if that justifies him winning gold gloves when year in and year out he ranks avg to below avg defensively.

Nah, I just use that because it's what he's always been. Other than that (and the aforementioned Mariah), I have no desire to defend Derek Jeter.

Jeter's one of the greatest shortstops of all-time. It just doesn't have to with his defense.

Ripken is a really really good player. But his average year was about .276 22 HR 80 RBI. That is pretty good, but certainly not great. He had a few really really good years like in 83, 84 and 91. But people talk about him like he is one of the all time greats and I don't see it.

A shortstop with a career line of .276/.340/.447 is quite good. And Ripken was a very good defender at SS. He should have won more GGs than he did.

Ah, I didn't mean to be a wet blanket...bash away!

Although I have to respect a guy who nailed Mariah Carey when she was hot...and then was smart enough to dump her.

HA! Being a wet blanket is more my M.O than yours would be my guess..... And, I am very much only a "kid gloves" basher anyway, as I would much rather amuse and or inform than to rile up and enrage.

Better for the overall life karma...

Rafael Palmeiro wins the 1B Gold Glove in 1999, with a total of 28 games played at 1B that year.

Discuss (disgust?)

And this is one of the main reasons that any award voted on by the writers is a joke.

They're chosen by the managers.

But they are a joke.

Is it because he was a consummate professional? ;)

Having a SS who can hit and doesn't make mistakes has value.

Jeter is thought of as a great defensive SS for 2 plays in my mind. The dive into the stands which is nice and the throw against the A's to home.

Which dive into the stands?... I remember one agianst the Sox, I believe, where he busted his ass and caught a foul pop, which was nice, but then he continued to run about fifteen more feet, then fell into the stands. I remember the Yankee fans saying how awesome it was, and all I could think was, "why didn;t he just stop, or slow dow, or slide so he didn't have to bust his lip (or eye, or whatever).

Is this the one you remember? Anyone feel like looknig up the video clip? My memory is shaky and my eyes may have been tinted...

And he was very lucky to be so far out of position on that random cut off play against the A's. Would have been nice if their outfielder didn't make such a terrible throw....

Hey, imagine if Jeter was announcing the Home Run Derby and Garciaparra was still playing? That would be cool!

Random short stop memories....

Nomar is one year older than Jeter who is one year older than ARod.

Arod is one inch taller than Jeter who is one inch taller than Nomar.

Arod was a rookie in 95, Jeter in 96, Nomar in 97.
