Some might not be familiar with how Ken Whisenhunt has fared over the last months or even years so i will give them a bit of something to catch up with.....
So far as head coach he is 3-17 in TN for his first 20 games. He has lost 17 of his last 19 games.
In those first 20 games the team has scored 356 points and given up 529 points.
Whisenhunt is 48-68 overall and 4-26 in his last thirty games.
This year in TN he is 1-3 when he should be 3-1.
Against Indy he has a 27-14 lead 4th quarter ten minutes left with the Colts starting a drive on their own 2 yard line. Later the Colts are facing 3rd and 20 on the TN 35 make the stop game is over but Luck throws a TD. TN loses the game 35-33. 2 point loss
Next game against Buffalo TN dominates the whole game leading 10-0 near end of 3rd quarter. Anyway later the score is 13-7 TN leads with seven minutes left in game Buffalo faces a 3rd down and 23 on their own 7 yard line make the stop TN wins but instead Taylor runs gains 24 yards for a first down and then TN penalized for roughness tacking on 15 more yards. Buffalo then scores a TD big play was a 46 yard deep pass to Chris Hogan. TN loses game 14-13. 1 point loss
So instead of being 3-1 the team is 1-3 and a lot of it was because of Whisenhunt being too conservative with leads and then squandering the lead later with bad game management and mistakes.
Guess what this isn't the first time he has opened a season this way. Also happened at the start of 2011 and he had a similar one also in 2007.
WTF??? I think most organizations would've already been looking for a replacement however in Tennessee right now there is a short term CEO in place for the time being and there have been rumors in the media the team might be up for sale something the owners strongly deny. Anyway there is not a very solid structure in place at the moment and no one really knows what to think.
Going back to his first year in Arizona in 2007 the signs were already there that he was an underachiever and not very good at being head coach.....
Very first game at San Francisco with around six minutes left in the 4th quarter Arizona score a TD to go up 17-13. With three minutes left the 49ers go on a 12 play 86 yard drive they give up a 1 yard rushing TD to the 49ers with 20 seconds left to lose 20-17. AZ wins the time of possession battle having the ball 9 minutes more than S.F.---3 point loss in last minute to S.F.
Third game at Baltimore with 1:50 left in the whole game Arizona tie the game on a FG. Then the Cards defense gives up a 9 play 52 yard drive and Baltimore kicks a FG with time expiring to lose 26-23.-----3 point loss in last second to Baltimore.
Week seven at Washington with 21 seconds left in the game Arizona misses a 41 yard FG and lose the game 21-19. Arizona won time of possession having the ball 9 minutes more than Wash. Also Arizona had 360 total yards while Washington had 160 yards so Arizona outgained them by 200 yards.---2 point loss to Wshington missed a game winning FG in last seconds of game.
In week twelve at home against San Francisco the Cards were winning 28-24 with a minute and half to go give up a 35 yard run to Frank Gore but do end up tying it 31-31 to go to overtime. In overtime Arizona fumble the ball and the 49ers score a TD to win 37-31 in OT----6 point loss in OT on fumble
So to put 2007 in perspective thats four losses that could've been wins. He is 8-8 could've been 12-4 but blew leads regularly in what looks like bad game management.
2008 he could only muster a 9-7 record and 10-6 in 2009 with Kurt Warner at QB. Warner left after the 2009 season. I think the reason he lasted as long as he did in AZ and got the head job in TN was because of him reaching the Super Bowl in 2008.
So 2010 is Whisenhunts first season without Warner at QB. This is when the QB carousel began to take shape. There were 4 QB's to take snaps that year Derek Anderson,John Skelton,Max Hall,Richard Bartel. All threw more interceptions than TD's.
In 2010 Arizona was ranked 31st in offense and 29th in defense along with a 5-11 record. They weren't competitive this season at all losing 41-7 to Atlanta, lost 41-10 to San Diego, lost 36-18 to Seattle, lost 31-13 to K.C.,lost 27-6 to 49ers,lost 19-6 to St. Louis and 38-7 to 49ers in final game of year.
In 2011 he bounced back with Kevin Kolb at QB for a short period. Arizona were ranked 19th in offense and 18th in defense along with an 8-8 record. This was another season where with better discipline and not giving up leads the team could've made the postseason. 2011 was similar to 2007 both 8-8 seasons with several blown games.
2nd game of season against Washington. With a little over nine minutes left in the 4th quarter Arizona is leading Washington 21-13 then with less than five minutes left in the game Washington scores a TD on a 13 play 73 yard drive that started in Wsshington's own 27 yard line. The Cards lead 21-19 and later with a little over a minute left Washington caps an 8 play 48 yard drive with a FG. Washington wins the game on a last minute FG 22-21.
3rd game of season against Seattle. Arizona misses two FG's including one in the 4th quarter. Arizona was also winning most of the game. Seattle wins the game 13-10.
4th game of season against N.Y. Giants. With a little over five minutes left to go in the game Arizona scores to take a 27-17 ten point lead. In under two minutes N.Y. goes on a 7 play 80 yard drive for a TD now its 27-24. Next after Arizona punts N.Y. returns the ball to midfield. Then Eli Manning throws a 20 yard pass to Victor Cruz and then a 30 yard TD pass to Hakeem Nicks and the NY Giants win 31-27 by four points.
So with blown leads he is 1-3 instead of 3-1 in 2011. Same thing happens in 2014.
In week 8 that year Arizona goes against Baltimore and are winning 24-3 at halftime. Baltimore comes back to win 30-27 by three points on a last second FG. Another huge lead blown. One of the most impressive comebacks in NFL history. Just three years later as TN head coach he leads Cleveland 28-3 at halftime only to lose the game 29-28 in what was the biggest road comeback EVER.
2012 ranked dead last in offense. Has a 5-11 record although he starts year 4-0. lost three games by four points or less could've made it to another 8-8 finish. However he loses 11 out of his last 12 games including one to Seattle 58-0.
Arizona improved to 10-6 in 2013 after Whisenhunt left. The team has went 25-12 since his departure.
2014 his first year coaching Tennessee he has the 30th ranked offense and 29th ranked defense along with a 2-14 record.
In a nutshell my argument is that Whisenhunt only had two good seasons as a head coach in 2008/2009 only because of QB Kurt Warner. Even then with a red hot veteran QB he could only manage a 9-7 record in 2008 and 10-6 in 2009.
Besides those two years Whisenhunt was shite no better way to put it. Up until this week not counting 2008-2009 he has a 29-55 overall record with 2008-2009 it is 48-68. He is a good offensive coordinator BUT a very bad head coach.
