Some pitchers do it too when they throw the ball.

Basically Monica Seles cheated her way to the top doing it so many coaches started teaching kids to do it.

By screaming so loud the opponent can not hear the ball hit the racquet. Mishits end up being winners because opponents cant recognize them in time. An opponent can not judge how hard a ball is hit. Also, by extending the grunt after the ball leaves the racquet it is technically a hinderance and against the rules.

They don't have to. But nowadays, they're coached to do it to distract and annoy the opponent.

It's almost become unwatchable for me now.
Sharipova is the worst.
I like Halep, and she does it some, but other times,nothing.
Kinda confusing.
