NCAA's Emmert: Paying players a nonstarter

What college athletes need to do is refuse to play en masse in protest of the amateurism rules. The most high-profile athletes across all sports refusing to play will draw attention to the schools which they attend and the rules which the athletes are protesting.

The schools will agree that Emmert's insistence on not paying athletes is keeping their most prized student-athletes from wanting to play, and will call for his removal in favor of someone who is in favor of paying college athletes.

He said exploring allowing students to make money on things such as endorsements was worthy of consideration.

There are ways of addressing all of the illegal outside money that can't possibly ever go away and it doesn't involve paying players directly from the institutions.

It's a non starter because of Title IX and the impact it would have on the vast majority of institutions that cannot survive at all with a direct pay model.

It would break more than it fixes.

I know how CBS and Turner can back the NCAA into a corner.

They can threaten to walk away from their contract to air the NCAA tournament unless the NCAA starts allowing college athletes to be paid. And the schools don't have to do it themselves, the association can do it.

CBS and Turner should be uncomfortable with making lots of money off of the tournament while the players don't see a dime.

Walk away from contract ? You realize you can’t just walk away from them without being in breach of contract and since it’s an 8.8 billion contract 2032 that’s gonna be a big lawsuit coming. You always ignore what @WizardHawk said about Title IX and how most schools couldn’t afford it.

Apparently you didn't get that I said the NCAA themselves could pay the athletes

NCAA prez: Option to go pro 'needs to be there'

Emmert wants the option for high school players to go straight to college, but he says paying college players will encourage them to not follow rules. I don't believe that for one second.

CBS and Turner need to draw a line. They should say either Emmert gets replaced with someone in favor of paying college athletes (which the NCAA can do directly), or they stop broadcasting March Madness.

Someone as closed-minded as Emmert should not be running a major sports organization.
