John Elway retired as the Denver Broncos General Manager yesterday. I’m sure it frustrated him to walk away with so much work to do after a 5-11 season and 5 consecutive losing seasons. When he retired as a player he walked away after back to back Super Bowl wins. John is the most competitive person I know. He won a championship as the general manager of the Denver Crush Arena League team. As the Broncos General Manager and Director of Football Operations Elway put together two very different Bronco teams that appeared in Super Bowls. Denver won Super Bowl 50 with a great defense and lost Super Bowl 48 after setting multiple all-time NFL offensive records. As a Broncos player Elway was the quarterback in five different Super Bowls, three of which we lost and two wins after I retired. John is a winner. We knew as a defense that if we kept the score close we were probably going to win with Elway in the fourth quarter. Once again I’m sure the past five years have frustrated John more than anyone else involved. I’m glad he’s staying on as a consultant with the title of Director of Football Operations. Elway is a huge tie to, and reminder of, Pat Bowlen’s culture of winning. Without an owner and without John’s daily presence, the new general manager choice is going to set the course for the franchise for the foreseeable future. Elway’s family, restaurants, and car dealerships will see more of him now. Best wishes in your ”retirement” John. Of all the picks you’ve made as a GM, your next pick, the pick of your successor, will be the most important pick of all. Karl Mecklenberg. He was one of my favorite Broncos growing up.
