I like this. He was making $4 mil and said he wanted to go to a contender instead of a longer contract.

He is still getting his buy out money and will for awhile. He took less money last year to try and win and Pittsburgh and is taking even less to try and win with the Kings.
This is a signing I felt would happen since the start of UFA season since I felt like he was a prefect fit here. Hes a work horse too and can play 20-25 minutes a game so fits in great for the 2nd pair unit and hopefully Doughty wont have to play as often.

I am really happy about this signing. He's obviously not a Voynov caliber D, but he can (assuming he's healthy) eat 20-23 minutes like Deader said. Now I can look forward to the season starting.

Solid signing. Good puck mover and a cannon for a shot.
I don't think he will hit 40 points again like he has before, but the biggest thing is it's a veteran defender who takes some of the minutes off Doughty's shoulders. He can also man the PP and move up and down the defense pairings as necessary. He can make some bonehead plays in the defensive zone now and again, hopefully his partner can help with that.
So the defense now looks like Greene, McNabb, McBain, Muzzin, Doughty, Martinez and Ehrhoff. Options open up here which revolve mostly around McBain of all people:
- Voynov makes the team, McBain doesn't play unless they carry 8 defensemen and 13 forwards. McBain is on a 1 year/$600,000 two-way contract so if he gets demoted ($300,000 AHL salary) and isn't claimed on Waivers they don't take either cap hit.
- Voynov doesn't make the team, McBain and Forbert are going to be duking it out for that eight defender slot.
- Voynov makes the team, neither McBain or Forbert are kept and the Kings roll with those 7 defenders.
Personally I would feel most comfortable with the seven of Greene, McNabb, Muzzin, Doughty, Voynov, Martinez and Ehrhoff in which case I think Ehrhoff plays as needed.
