Are the Flames in a better position to get a new arena than Edmonton is? Katz has a sweet arena deal. I find it hard to believe he could do better elsewhere.

All he is doing is pushing to see how much he can get away with. Unless I'm mistaken, edmonton had already agreed to pony up $250 mill towards the arena. Now he's threatening to move the team unless he gets 400m? Total bitch move, and totally in character for Katz.

Geez how much is this thing supposed to cost? Nassau County voted down a 350M bond issue that would have given the Isles a new arena & a new basball stadium for the L.I. Ducks minor league baseball team.

On the Oilers TV show they were talking about an ART GALLARY being built in the deal. Seriously? I'm sorry, but that's a waste of money if you ask me. If an arena can be built in L.I. for under 350M the money Edmonton has already agreed to give should come close to building a new arena for the Oilers.

Source says Katz would pay half of new building, expenses and wouldn't own it. "Bad deal". "Desperate" is how situation is described.

no ownership interest for Katz?

I'm assuming this is the arena deal in Seattle? He must really be pissed at Edmonton City Council (or just applying more pressure for a sweetheart deal in Edmonton).

Let him move the team, I hear Phoenix could use a new home anyway. Edmonton is a good market, where the hell does he think he is going to move and make more money?

I say call his bluff.

DarrenDreger: Oilers lease at Rexall expires in 2 yrs. City council doesn't think team would leave. By visiting Seattle, Katz is saying never say never.

I still would be shocked if the Oilers left, but the moving trucks were in place and about to be loaded when the EIG stepped up to buy the team in the late 90's.

Friedman sheds some light on edm new arena deal ... no ownership but they get the profits from the arena operations

3. Katz was to pay the arena's operating fees and $192.5 million over 35 years to cover construction costs in exchange for the profits from all arena events for 11 months of a calendar 12, plus naming rights estimated at approximately $1 million per year, plus city advertising worth another $2 million per year

Really, he its going to threaten with Seattle? A city that let their basketball team leave because they wouldn't publicly fund a new arena?

I'm not buying it.

I heard from one person who met with Katz here - who was 'skeptical' - about his true interest in #Seattle, may be leverage move. #nhl

even the people who met with Katz think hes disingenuous

Oh Edmonton, don't ever change...

/City has such an inferiority complex
.

"Inferiority Complex" would be a good name for the new arena development :noidea:

/kinda tangent but I heard talk than the city wants to have an "LA Live" type component to this development ... kind of an entertainment district ... outside gathering place with boutiques shops and restaurants

its gonna be a real go-to place in the winter months

That situation is a little different. Seattle had already agreed to tax increases to help pay off debt for both CenuryLink and Safeco fields which expired just last year. The people of Seattle didn't want to raise and extend those taxes to pay for a third stadium. Bennett's "best effort" to leave the team in Seattle basically was, I want a $500M arena, you will pay for it 100% and you have about 6 months to get it done. It was never gonna happen and Bennett knew that. He only did it so that he could say he "tried" to keep the Sonics in Seattle.
