I kinda like the idea of seeing Hall, Eberle and RNH in Seattle, but I really don't like the idea of Kevin Lowe being in any way affiliated with my team let alone its president. While I think this is nothing but posturing from Katz, it's nice to see that there's already interest in the Seattle market from an NHL owner. Hopefully it means there will be an NHL team there sooner rather than later.

As a seattle sports fan, how do u feel about a team owner potentially holding a city hostage for a new arena and leaving if his demands arent met?

I can't say I like it, but there's really nothing I can do about it. It's a tactic that's existed for a long time. Katz isn't the first to do it and he surely won't be the last. It's unfortunate that this is what it has come to but if Katz feels like this is the best chance to get the best deal for him then that's what he's gonna do.

Seattle kind of saw this when Clay Bennett purchased the Sonics. It was slightly different though as I believe Katz wants to keep the Oilers in Edmonton if he can, while Bennett never had any intentions of keeping the Sonics in Seattle. Fortunately for me I quit caring about the NBA nearly a decade before the Sonics left so I really didn't care. However, I knew a few people who were devastated when they left. Stuff like this sucks for the hardcore fans, I won't argue with that.

the bold is why i posed the question

I just find irony in a few (not you) celebrating this days development for seattle with what happened with the sonics

Lol cant wait for the next episode of oil change

Oil Change II - Area Code Edition

btw, the league will NEVER allow one of its profitable northern teams to move, while there are up to 6 teams consistently bleeding money.
remember, these 6 or 7 very profitable markets (mostly CDN teams and NYR) are keeping the bottom few teams afloat.

In the logical world of the NHL, the Coyotes stay in Phoenix/Glendale and the Oilers move to Seattle...

I can't see the Oilers going anywhere. I think this is good for Seattle. It gives them a bit more credibility as a prospective new location for an NHL team in the event of expansion or relocation. It's just a matter of if/when that will happen.

Katz has Edmonton City Council over a barrel and he knows it - Even Bettman has said that the Oilers need a new arena in order for long time viability.

I see this as posturing by Katz. The most interesting thing about this to me is two hockey teams in Alberta want new arenas. How are they both going to be funded?

That's why I'm glad to see Edmonton going first :thumb:

Its all a very odd public move by katz

Bringing gretzky for the supposed meeting ... To get attention sure

He's a slimy guy ... Telling seattle reporters he lives most of the year in vancouver

I cant see him getting a better deal in seattle ... John shannon said the oil pay $1 rent per year + operating costs ($1.2 mill)

As an LA area boy I know how it is to be used to get a better deal for another city. Every team in the NFL has threatened to go to LA if the city didn't pony up for a new stadium deal.

So I'll admit I'm not particularly familiar with Rexall Place. That sounds like a good deal and Edmonton is one of the Canadian teams that makes a bunch of money. So why do they need a new arena? Just because an arena is old doesn't necessarily mean it's obsolete.

If Katz gets the deal he wants in Edmonton how would it affect Calgary? Would it be easier or harder for the Flames to get a new arena?

I'm just looking at it from a public funding perspective - If the province kicks in some money towards a new arena in Edmonton, you know that Flames owners will be looking for the same kind of treatment.

Because katz wants a new toy and he hopes the new toy can make him more money

They reportedly made 18 mill this season ... Paid into revenue sharing too

Are the Flames in a better position to get a new arena than Edmonton is? Katz has a sweet arena deal. I find it hard to believe he could do better elsewhere.
