So, there' this from Krap's blog yesterday:
I don’t know if any team would take Zito if it cost them even only $9M over three years–that’s still $8M more than they’d have to pay some kid to put up similar numbers, possibly–but it’s worth a try.
First, Krapakami is full of....wait for it....KRAP.
1. Any team in baseball, even the Phil$, would take Zito for 9MM/3 years. He's worth roughly 9-10MM/yr as a 2.0 WAR pitcher
2. "Some kid" isn't likely to be a 2.0 pitcher. Those "kids" are in short supply in baseball, witness the dumpster full of Bartolo Colons the Yankee$ have amassed. If "some kid" IS a 2.0 pitcher (you know, the kind who throw 190 innings, have a 4.10 ERA and take the ball 32 times) then you STILL need Zito, unless you're the Phil$, and even then it's arguable that Blanton isn't their Zito.
Now, that foolishness aside, it does prompt the question which might be interesting for us to kick around:
How much salary would the Giants have to eat to trade Zito for peanuts (or a Ryan Verdugo/Brad Eldred type prospect)?
My guess:
Given Barry's WARs for the last four years of:
2007 1.7
2008 1.4
2009 2.2
2010 2.1
..for an average WAR of 1.85. He's got three years at $18.5, $19, $20, and a $7 buyout in 2014 (in millions). Let's say he remains that guy for the next three years. I think this is a reasonable assumption given his past performance and durability. That's a total of $64.5 he's due for the remainder of his contract. If he puts up three 1.85 WAR seasons, that would be a total of 5.55 WAR. Currently, WAR is valued at $5 per, so my estimated "value" for Zito 2011-2013 is about $27.75. Thus I'd estimate we'd have to "eat" $36.75 to trade him away for peanuts. If more significant talent were coming back then the amount the Giants would have to absorb would be higher.
Disclaimer: I do NOT think we should be dealing Zito, as no major league average pitcher is available to replace him in our system or through FA.
