I think an expiring "bad" contract is good in any sport. An underpaid guy having his contract expire in his prime, probably not as good for teams.

I meant specifically as it related to the salary cap. Which means I answered my own question (I think?).

I'm 100% positive A-Rod was given that contract because the Yankees were convinced he was going to break the All-Time Home Run record, and they NEEDED him in a Yankee uniform when it happened.

Oh, you KNOW it. They had grand visions of him hitting that record HR to straight-away center and becoming the greatest Yankee ever. They made an investment based on an expected windfall that will never happen. Next question: will he ever don the pin-stripes again?
