lets hear some of your great insight on the whole Penner trade.

justins numbers are down,he is a -12 28 years old so age is not helping the cause.....most likely renting him for the playoffs to add size, giving up 3 players for an aging declining player is not to shabby....so like i said kings in the long run get the shaft anything else

How did the Kings get hosed?

I think Penner is a player who works hard only when it suits him. For 4 plus million that isn't good enough, IMO.

The deal makes them better right now, but for the package they gave up I think they could have gotten Hemsky who is a much better player.

I agree with Kenny... two firsts plus a conditional pick should land something better than Penner.

Look at it this way, would you rather have Brad Boyes for a 2nd, or Penner for Teubert, a 1rst, and another pick?

I can't wait until Lowebellini drafts 5'8" 165 lbs Patrik Thor CantMissWithThisOne from the Norwegian elite league with one of those picks.

LOL. That could very well happen but right now this is good for the Oilers.

interesting read from the Copper & Blue:

The biggest asset coming to the Oilers is prospect Colten Teubert who was drafted 13th overall by the Kings in 2008, after being ranked 13th overall by Bob McKenzie just before the draft. Red Line Report, meanwhile, had Teubert as the sixth best defender in the draft just behind Drew Doughty, Zach Bogosian, Luke Schenn, Alex Pietrangelo, and Tyler Myers, and just ahead of Tyler Cuma, Roman Josi, Luca Sbisa, and Brandon Burlon. That looks like an awfully big drop in quality and the line seems to be right beside Teubert. The question is, which side does he fall on? Here's what Red Line had to say before the draft:

After Myers, there's a significant drop down to the next tier of defenders.

Shit.

Well, that doesn't necessarily mean Teubert is a bad pick-up. He has 10 points in 39 games for the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, this season and his +7 rating is good enough for fifth on the club behind Vyacheslav Voynov, Jake Muzzin, Thomas Hickey, and Andrew Campbell. We know that last season Teubert faced the toughest minutes while in Regina thanks to Scott Reynolds' Qualcomp study on the Regina Pats. He did acquit himself quite well on a very bad team, so at least that's encouraging. Plus, as a former teammate of Jordan Eberle, we know that he must be good in the room, a quality highly valued by the Oilers' brass.

So that's Colten Teubert, a pretty good prospect who might one day turn into a shut-down defender in the NHL, but who might also top out as a third pairing bruiser. Not only is he not the Kings' top prospect, he's not even their top defensive prospect, and might not have been in their top three. So yeah, don't get your hopes up.

As for the draft picks... well, they're not great. They're good, but not great. The 2011 pick is very likely going to come in the 14th to 25th range, which Scott has as a 27.8% chance of becoming a good player. The conditional pick is obviously even lower than that, whether it ends up as a second rounder or a third rounder.

And that's why this is the donut trade. It's the man who loves donuts for a return with no centerpiece. Dean Lombardi has done a fantastic job here. He's moved three peripheral assets for an impact player, and that's always a good deal. Steve Tambellini? Well, he's done the opposite. Penner was young enough that he could have been part of the solution here, but instead he was sent packing. Will the Oilers get a player that can impact a game like Penner out of their three new prizes. Probably not.

This is a great trade for the Kings. Penner is a big power forward. He will fit in nicely with the Kings.

The 1st round pick is probably going to be between 20 & 30. Teubert was the 4th defenseman in Manchester. He's now the top D prospect in the entire Oilers organization. Yes that's how deep the Kings are on the Blueline.

Now we have 3 former Stanley Cup winners on the roster. Over the years they got some Ex oilers like Gretzky, Kurri, Smyth, Stoll & now Penner.

reading most the Oilers comments, they aren't too happy on what they got in return.

Penner will wear no. 25

I guess it goes without saying that the Oilers defensive prospects aren't that great...

/Just wanted to make sure I pointed that out :D

Have to agree the Kings overpaid for Penner. Does it make them better yes. Are they a legit Cup contender now, not really, but every little bit helps.

Instead of just reading the headlines and stating it here. please someone come up with some reasonable explanation as to why this is such a bad deal for the Kings.

1. Kings lost ZERO roster players.
2. They kept Schenn.
3. 2011 1st round pick could be anywhere from 25th-30th who knows, and the chances of that pick being an immediate impact star player? next to nothing.
4. 2012 2nd round pick (if Kings win the Cup this year) 3rd rounder if they don't.
5. Tuebert will most likely be in the Oiler farm system for several more years. And was one of the least rated amongst Kings impressive D core.
6. Since Penner still has a year left on his contract, it does allow Lombardi to be aggressive in the off season to acquire another impact player, flexibility with re-signings, etc. And they have the cap space to do it.
7. Its not like the Kings have to demote anybody or all of sudden shift the lines around, they've been doing that all season. That 1st line LW slot has been filled and tossed around more than Tera Patrick.

I just think that Penner is a similiar type of player as Boyes, and the Sabres only gave up a 2nd round pick for him.

Only time will tell if the Kings perhaps gave up a tad too much for a player that perhaps they could of got for less?

That being said, Penner is a good addition to the Kings.
