Could tomorrow be the 1st time Dri Archer has an explosive play on offense? With more opportunities I like his chances.

Lets hope so. We'll need all the explosive plays we can get against the Saints.

Yeah...I just don't get it though...it's almost as if he's looking for a splash play the 1st time he touches it or nothing. Even if you're going to use him as a decoy...Colbert and the OFC staff were not on the same page at all with this guy.

Based on his production its not like I am clamoring to see more of Dri Archer but I agree the way they use him is a strange deal. First off, they seem intent on running the wheels off their franchise RB so that doesn't leave many plays for anyone else. Then, when they do put him in, its for one or two plays and then he is done for the game. And last week they ran him up the middle! Hello! He's 170 pounds. Might not be the best use of his skill set!

Who knows, maybe if he was in for 10 plays or so and they pitched it to him or used him on a fly sweep (he seems to run sideline to sideline well) he might actually gain some significant yardage.

Running up the middle is a big gamble with smaller backs. Sometimes it pays off huge when the O-line is getting after it, but they struggled against the saints. Decastro was busy for most of the day trying to compensate for Mike Adams' struggles which took away from the inner blocking strength. Something Haley should have seen/known and therefore not deployed Archer up the middle.

That's the point...I think any OFC player needs to get into the flow of the game for a few plays at a time...especially a ball carrier. Oh well, maybe they spring him on the Bengals.

Off topic, but noteworthy...Ngata suspended 4 gms for PEDS.

Beyond getting in the flow of the game, if you only put him in on plays you plan to give him the ball, it's a pretty easy defensive read.

Exactly...Haley is botching this on many levels...he's a specialty player, not a 20 touch a game player, I think we all get that...but a 4.2 threat on the sidelines is not much of a threat.

Well I know that Harris was going to take over RB2 duties... I just didn't think it would happen so fast. Archer was a healthy scratch today. Curious to see how they handle Dri Archer from here on out.

Barring injury, my guess is that Archer joins Landry Jones on the permanent inactive list. They don't need him at this point.

They should be thinking about moving Hojo up from the PS before any other greedy teams reach into our cookie jar again… Archer & Jones are dispensable at this point. Neither contributes in a positive way so put one on waivers and try and stash them on the PS. IMO Jones is the least likely to draw any interest. :noidea:

Yeah...Josh Harris did take over #2 quicker than I thought as well...PS...Some team will think they can use 4.2 speed some how, and I still think he can be productive if used properly. Haley/Tomlin are hanging Colbert out to dry on this 3rd rd pick.

Agree on Hojo and I would expose Landry 1st...Archer next.

Honestly I couldn't give a rat's ass if they lost Archer… Sure some team will bite, but he's just too easily replaceable for the Steelers at this point in time. They took a shot on him and for whatever reason it didn't pan out the way they envisioned. I'd love to see them use him properly and get his confidence up. But so far all they want/need is a splash return guy. Wheaton fits that bill… And hundreds of other FA's or PS guys out there could fit that bill as well. If they lost him and *knock on wood* something were to happen to Bell, they could easily bring in a FA on short notice and bring him up to speed to the same level of Archer.

That's why I see him as disposable. Like I said, I wish they could figure out a way to use him. But for now it just seems like such a waste. Haley hasn't seen fit to try him out of the slot much yet. They are likely putting that 'project' on the back burner for now so they can concentrate on fundamental football. And yea, I'd definitely put Landry out first.

Yeah I hear ya Face, and there's been zero production to provide any hope there could be in the future, but you can't keep squandering picks that high. Especially since the kid hasn't really been given a legit chance to produce aside from kickoff returns...if they had made a more concerted effort on OFC...it would be easier for me to move on also.

Absolutely, at this point in the season they need to continue to focus on what's working...my point is if that continues (1 season and done with 3rd rd picks, the Steelers are going to be thin at a lot of positions)

Well now that the Steelers are becoming more active during free agency they are at least filling the voids. Not the way they want to do it, but at least they are doing what is necessary. The drafts are becoming more and more important now that they are clearing out these old vets. A miss on any of the first 5 rounds is going to come back to bite them. Anything they hit on above those rounds is just a cherry on top.

This is my angle more than anything, position aside...3rd round is too high to bail on after a year ...I would like to see a concerted effort to use the player, then if he doesn't work out, you move on.

They have missed on CB in the 5th rd in back to back years...we're already seeing it bite them. This back 4 they're trotting out there right now is just fools gold imo. Any NFL QB with quality WRs will light this group up. If CIN didn't take the foot off the gas, I think they would've but up 40 pts themselves.

CB/Draft… I think the EPIC fall from grace that Cortez Allen took was this biggest setback for the defense. They of course picked up decent talent in FA (McCain, Blake) so Richardson wasn't as valuable. If Cortez would have played to his hyped potential then this secondary would be in decent shape. Same things could be said about Mike Mitchell as well lol. Still not quite sure who to point a finger at between those 2. Gay/Taylor/McCain would have split games at the other CB. It would be quite the different look from this defense if that would have played out better. They invested a lot in Cortez, and the gamble didn't pay off. Or at least it hasn't yet. But I do agree that their failures in the draft are still hurting them in some ways. I was hoping that they would keep Shaq Richardson on PS IR to try and develop him, but of course when the settlement was announced he was gone.

It's almost a done deal that they draft CB in round 1 or 2, if not both. Hopefully they trade back for one since CB's are very hit or miss when drafting that high.

DB's have a pretty high failure rate in general, not enough to toss throwaway 5th-7th round picks at them. For reference William Gay and Ryan Mundy are the best 5-7th round DB picks they've had in the past 15 years.

Even career nickel/depth guys like Townsend and Hank Poteat were top 4 round picks.
