Whose the favorite right now? I saw on NFL.com they think JJ Watt again, and Jason Hatcher gets some attention there. No one has mentioned Sean Lee. He is a absolute stud. Maybe I'm a homer to think he has a chance at it?

A homer pick, but à very realistic one, Earl Thomas.

I don't know how realistic that is. Not when Chun Lee in Dallas has the same number of picks & a crap load of tackles.

A safety has won DPOY only 5 times since they started giving the award, so I would say no at this point.

Mathis I would think would have to be the front runner at this time. He leads the league in the sexy stat of Sacks, has that what I like to call big game changing moment where he stripped sacked Peyton Manning, and plays on a defense that has had a huge turnaround from one year.

Mathis and Lee would be solid picks. Earl Thomas is having an outstanding year as well. I'm a big JJ Watt fan but he hasn't been as good this year.

Even Quinn from St. Louis could be in this conversation. He's also having a great year.

Wow there are quite a few guys I would put ahead of him at this point. Not even sure how you could think this one when Kiko Alonso could even be in the talks for DPOY.

Kiko Alonzo has 4 picks in addition to a bunch of tackles & outstanding play, so he has to be ahead of Reid at this point for DROY. He should be in the running for DPOY in fact (although there are others who are more deserving IMO). Although I think Eric Reid and Sheldon Richardson should both make the pro bowl.

Actually, there is a pattern of safeties winning every three years, and this is the third year. Reed in 03. Sanders in 07. Polamalu in 10. So yeah, it's basically a lock when considering this pattern.

Seriously though, I think Thomas can win, IMO he's the catalyst for his top 5 defense and is racking up nice numbers for a safety.

When Reed won he had 9 INTs, 3 FF, 8 PDs and 76 tackles.

When Sanders won he had 2 INTs, 0 FF, 6 PDs and 72 tackles.

When Polamalu won he had 7 INTs, 1 FF, 11 PDs and 67 tackles.

Right now Thomas is on pace for 8 INTs, 4 FFs, 12 PDs, and 118 tackles.

Now there is 5 pass rushers on pace for 20+ sacks that will garner recognition. But this is one award that doesn't always purely go to the stats. They usually do a pretty good job of measuring overall impact along with stats for DPOY. I like his chances.

Honestly I think earl would have to put up more flashy numbers to win like go on a int tear, but the plays he makes that dont show up as stats are amazing. I dont really care whether he wins or not, im just glad hes on the team. Hes definitely our defensive mvp

The game has also changed a lot. As the league has become more passing oriented safeties have become centerpieces of defenses. Like I pointed in the other post, 3 of the 5 safeties to win it have been in the last decade. That's not a coincidence.

The AP usually does a good job. I still think it was complete BS that Barry Sanders & his 2000+ yards had to share the MVP with the Favre hype machine in 1997, and I think Rivers deserved it over Peyton in '08, but I'll give the AP 100 times more credit than I give the method pro bowl players are voted in.

The numbers he's putting up are not insane, but they are extremely impressive.

I feel like they do a better job with defensive awards. Hell, we've seen Jason Taylor and Cortez Kennedy win DPOY on teams with horrible records. That would never happen with an offensive player.

Yes. No one on the Cowboys should be in consideration considering their defense is ranked 32nd in the league.

Hatcher should get pro bowl consideration, but DPOY? Not even close.

Not really asking about Hatcher, don't think he'd get it either. My question is about Lee. I know he is on the 32 ranked defense, but his play has put us into positions to win games.

If not for his 2 picks, we'd have been blone out by the Lions.
