Yeah it really pissed me off at the time too. I mean, we don't see behind the scenes stuff, but the kid seemed well-liked enough, as has a ton of talent.
No we don't but the FO had no problems welcoming back Sandoval. I really doubt Williamson has been worse than the scorch-fest that Sandoval committed when he left.

Don't want to preempt SFGRTB, but did y'all notice Richmond won last night, 2-1 in 15 innings, and the winning pitcher was Caleb Gindl, who is normally an outfielder, who pitched two shutout innings?

Richmond scored in the 1st and the 15th innings.

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WON 3-2

Chris Shaw 1-4, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K. His 1-out double in the 8th was the go ahead and winning RBI
Orlando Calixte 2-4, 2 R, 1 SB (19).
Steven Duggar 0-2, 2 BB, 1 CS (1).

Andrew Suarez 5.0-6-1-1-2-3. Only 70 pitches for Suarez in this one, but it seems like the Giants are collectively easing their starters into the offseason.
D.J. Snelten 2.0-2-1-1-2-1
Tyler Rogers 1.0-0-0-0-2-0
Steven Okert 1.0-0-0-0-0-1. Inherited a bases-loaded situation from Rogers (2 walks and a HBP), got out of it.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) WON 2-1 in 15 innings

Caleb Gindl 1-7, 1 R, 2 K.
C.J Hinojosa 2-5, 2B, 1 R, 2 BB.
Myles Schroder 4-6, 1 RBI.
Brandon Bednar 2-6, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K. Had the walk-off single in the 15th. Well, it should have been an out, but oh well.

Dillon McNamara 4.0-0-0-0-3-1
Jordan Johnson 1.0-1-0-0-1-0
Carlos Alvarado 1.0-0-0-0-0-0
Jarret Martin 1.0-1-0-0-0-0
Seth Rosin 2.0-2-1-1-1-1
Tyler Cyr 1.0-0-0-0-0-2
Vic Black 3.0-1-0-0-4-2
Caleb Gindl 2.0-1-0-0-2-1. Gindl's first ever pitching appearance.

San Jose Giants (A+) were off

Augusta GreenJackets (A) were off

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) lost 9-4. This game was 2-1 Spokane heading into the 9th inning.......

Malique Ziegler 1-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (26), 1 assist. My guy needed a game like this in the worst way. He's been a brutal 19-125 (.152/.272/.280) his last 32 games. The walk rate is still really nice though.

Jose Marte 5.2-8-2-2-1-4
Aaron Phillips 2.1-5-5-4-0-3. Phillips was great, but sending him out to finish this game proved to be a mistake, didn't retire anyone in the 9th, giving up 5 runs (Timmins inherited 2 and both scored).
John Timmins 1.0-2-2-1-1-0

AZL Giants (Rookie) were off.

Tuesday 8/29

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WON 3-1

Steven Duggar 2-4, 1 R, 1 SB (3). Duggar is running more often, and running smarter than last year. Already as 10 steals in 39 games, only 1 caught, as opposed to 15 steals (and 14 caught) in 130 games last year. I'm really excited for this kid. Reports on his defense in CF have been excellent so far as well.
Mac Williamson 2-3, HR (13), 2 RBI, 1 R.
Ali Castillo 1-3, 3B, 1 R.

Matt Gage 7.0-4-1-1-0-2
Derek Law 2.0-1-0-0-1-1

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) lost 3-1

Aramis Garcia 2-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 K.

Cory Taylor 7.0-9-3-3-1-5
Stephen Johnson 1.0-0-0-0-0-2
Cody Hall 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

San Jose Giants (A+) lost a heartbreaker 6-5, giving up 3 runs in the 8th. It was a 3-way tie for a playoff spot leading into this game.

Bryan Reynolds 3-5, 3B, 1 R.
Dillon Dobson 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K.
Gio Brusa 1-5, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K.
Matt Winn 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K.
Ronnie Jebavy 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K.

Shoddy camera work here, but a nice triple from Breynolds

Garrett Williams 5.0-3-3-2-2-7. Fastball was lively again, 88-92 with a ton of sink. Reports said he fields his position well, and has a few good pickoff moves.
Matt Krook 2.0-1-0-0-0-2. This isn't a permanent move, but he's been great since moving to the Pen. He's incorporating all of his stuff, both of his breaking balls have played up significantly, and his fastball is still nasty. In 17 innings, he allowed 7 hits, 7 walks, 2 runs and 25 Ks (4 of the 7 walks came in one appearance too). If he can carry this into the rotation next year.... look out folks.
Will LaMarche 0.1-1-3-3-1-0.
Dylan Rheault 0.2-1-0-0-0-1.

Augusta GreenJackets (A) WON a thriller 7-6, scoring 4 in the 9th.

Jean Angomas 2-5, HR (1), 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 K.
Carlos Garcia 1-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.
Sandro Fabian 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 assist. Fabian had the big hit, a go-ahead 2-run single in the 9th. Has 4 3-hit games in his last 5. 13-23 in that span.
Kelvin Beltre 3-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS (6).

D.J. Myers 5.0-9-6-6-3-4
Sandro Cabrera 2.0-1-0-0-0-1
Patrick Ruotolo 2.0-0-0-0-0-5. Wow. The 2016 27th rounder out of UConn has just been fantastic this year. Should be a quick mover. I mean, look at this funk. Looks like he's in a rocking chair:

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) lost 6-4

Ryan Kirby 1-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, 1 R, 2 K.
Manuel Geraldo 2-2, 1 BB, 2 SB (23).
Kevin Rivera 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K.

Luis Pino 6.0-3-3-2-4-8
Tyler Schimpf 1.0-1-2-0-2-0
John Russell 2.0-2-1-0-0-1

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WON 6-1

Mac Williamson 2-4, HR (14), 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 K. When Mac hits 20 homeruns for the Tigers or someone, I'll laugh.
Ryan Lollis 3-4, 2 RBI, 1 R.
Juniel Querecuto 2-4, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R.

Kraig Sitton 4.0-1-1-1-1-3
Collin Balester 3.0-2-0-0-1-3
Reyes Moronta 1.0-1-0-0-0-1
Steven Okert 1.0-0-0-0-1-0

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) WON 6-1

Jerry Sands 3-3, HR (5), 1 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB.
K.C. Hobson 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 R.
Aramis Garcia 1-3, 2B, 1 R, 1 BB. That's 11 doubles, among 17 hits in AA so far.

Nate Reed 6.2-5-1-1-3-11. Indy baller, 29 years old. Cool moment for him though.
Jarret Martin 1.1-2-0-0-1-1
Tyler Cyr 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

San Jose Giants (A+) WON 3-0

Cristian Paulino 2-4, 2B, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 SB (3). Seems, as a whole, the organization is running more this year. Haven't crunched the numbers though. Electric game from Paulino.
Bryan Reynolds 1-4, 2 RBI, 2 K.
Ronnie Jebavy 1-2, 2 BB, 1 SB (13). Also made a stellar catch out in CF. He's a real good defender out there and has speed, if he could do ANYTHING with the bat, he'd be a major league bench guy.

But the biggest excitement of the night came from.....

Shaun Anderson 6.0-1-0-0-0-7. Dominant. Faced the minimum, was perfect through 5 innings. Fastball was up to 95. He still only threw 76 pitches, but the Giants were committed to their plan with him. Unless San Jose makes the playoffs, this was Anderson's last start. Great way to cruise into the offseason.
Heath Slatton 2.0-1-0-0-2-2
Dylan Rheault 1.0-0-0-0-0-1

Here's Anderson striking out the rehabbing Yunel Escobar on a wicked slider:

Augusta GreenJackets (A) WON 4-0 (Game 1)

Sandro Fabian 1-3, HR (10), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K.
Shawon Dunston Jr. 2-2, HR (1), 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (12), 1 PO.
Kelvin Beltre 1-2, 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB (13).
Michael Bernal 1-3, HR (2), 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 K.

Fabian homer, crushed:

Connor Kaden 6.0-3-0-0-1-5
Nolan Riggs 1.0-1-0-0-0-0

Augusta GreenJackets (A) WON 5-3 (Game 2)

Ashford Fulmer 2-3, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, SB (12).
Shawon Dunston Jr. 1-2, 2B, 1 R, 2 BB. God knows he didn't get his plate discipline from his father.
Skyler Ewing 1-3, HR (12), 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB.
Kelvin Beltre 2-4, HR (6), 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 SB (14).
Sandro Fabian 1-4, 2B.

Beltre's shot:

Ewing's homer hit the moon. Didn't see so you can't prove me wrong:

Caleb Baragar 5.0-5-3-3-2-5
Jeff Burke 1.0-0-0-0-0-1
Patrick Ruotolo 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

Shaun Anderson slider on loop forever. Sharp 11-5 break, late late break. That thing doesn't move until it crosses the plate. Escobar had no chance.

giphy.gif

Here's a report on Shaun Anderson from Baseball Census, one of my go-to sources. They are fantastic at what they do. Well worth a read, and worth digging into some of their other reports on Giants players. They have stuff on Heliot Ramos, Jacob Gonzalez, Krook, Williams, Reynolds, Beede, Arroyo and many more.

San Francisco Giants: Shaun Anderson’s exceptional stuff brings strong finish to his 2017 season

"San Bernardino, California —— San Francisco Giants right-handed pitching prospect Shaun Anderson was nearly perfect in his final start of the 2017 season: six innings on Wednesday night with just one hit, no walks, and no runs allowed against seven strikeouts of Inland Empire 66ers hitters in a San Jose Giants victory. It was my first time seeing Anderson after the San Francisco Giants traded for him from the Boston Red Sox in the Eduardo Nunez deal at the end of July, and I came away very impressed with the righty who is undoubtedly one of his new organization’s best pitching prospects.

Anderson sat 90-93 mph with his fastball on Wednesday night, and showed off a slider and a changeup in addition to the hard stuff. He reportedly throws a curveball, too, though that didn’t show on Wednesday. With as much late life as he had on his fastball and slider, though, there was little need for him break out the curveball against an Inland Empire club that didn’t barrel him up all night, even with a big leaguer hitting second as part of an injury rehab assignment."

Friday 9/1 (holy crap it's September already)

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WALKED-OFF again 3-2 in 10 innings

Chris Shaw 1-4, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K. Had the walk off.
Wynton Bernard 1-1, HR (2), 2 RBI, 1 R.
Austin Slater 1-3. Played RF.

Calixte and Hwang both played in this game.

Roberto Gomez 5.0-7-1-1-1-8. Gomez has been REALLY good for a couple months now. Since July 5th: 2.14 ERA, 54.2 IP, 49 Ks, 14 BBs, 1.17 WHIP, only 3 homers given up. He's a minor league vet of 7 years, but this is his first taste of AAA. Going pretty well so far. I don't expect anything out of him, but it's cool for him.
Reyes Moronta 2.0-0-0-0-0-3. Nice.
Tyler Rogers 2.0-2-1-1-2-2. Leaking oil here recently.
Drew Muren 1.0-0-0-0-1-0. Signed 2 weeks ago. Drafted in 2011 as an outfielder. Converted to pitching last year. Throws as hard as 99. He's 28 years old, but hey anyone that throws 99 deserves a look. And pitching wise, he's not 28 years old.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) was postponed (rain)

San Jose Giants (A+) lost 12-1

Cristian Paulino 2-4, HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 K, 1 E (2).

The batters also committed 4 errors. Just an overall terrible game. Tough to say if the pitchers struggled because of the poor defense, or if the pitching was just poor overall.

Matt Solter 4.1-6-7-5-3-2
Michael Cederoth 1.2-2-3-0-0-3
Rodolfo Martinez 2.0-3-2-2-0-0

If the Giants lose today, they are eliminated.

Augusta GreenJackets (A) WON 1-0

Jean Angomas 4-4, 2B, 1 CS, 1 PO. That's how you waste a 4-4 day.

Raffi Vizcaino 6.0-2-0-0-3-3
Melvin Adon 2.0-1-0-0-2-2
Nolan Riggs 1.0-0-0-0-0-0

Excellent pitching! The GreenJackets are finally playing well.... much too late.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) lost 12-4

Ryan Kirby 3-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.
Bryce Johnson 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PO.
Logan Baldwin 2-5, 2 K.
Kevin Rivera 2-4, 2B, 1 RBI.

Jason Bahr 2.0-1-0-0-1-2
Stetson Woods 0.2-4-5-5-2-0
Aaron Phillips 3.1-2-0-0-0-2
Alex Bostic 0.1-3-6-6-2-0
Alejandro De La Rosa 1.2-3-1-1-1-2
Juan Rodriguez 1.0-0-0-0-0-0. He's an outfielder.

AZL Giants (Rookie) WON 7-4 in 10 innings.

AZL Giants (1-0) WON 6-5 in the bottom of the 9th in a playoff game against the AZL Rangers. This means they play again.

Playoff format
  • Six teams qualify.
  • The first- and second-half winners of the three divisions qualify. (Giants won the first half)
  • If the same team wins both halves, then the next best overall season record becomes the second division qualifier.
  • The best two overall records get first round byes.
  • All matchups are single-elimination.
Ismael Munguia 3-5, 3 runs, double, triple
Jacob Gonzalez 2-5, 3 RBI's, double
Diego Rincones 2-4, run, RBI

John Russell (W, 1-0) 2.0-2-1-1-0-2 (21 y/o, Round 16/2017)

Thanks to SFGRTB for alternating weeks. It is fun to track the kids coming up through the system.

So that officially ends all minor league seasons, right?

Slater should be up in the next couple days. Maybe Snelton too...

AZL Giants won their first playoff game (in single elimination). They play again, though not sure when. Everyone else is done. San Jose had a shot, but melted down late. Sacramento, Richmond, Augusta and Salem-Keizer were not very good teams, though there was some talent on each team. Perhaps as the off-season approaches, we can discuss who moves up.

If you managed to go to only one River Cats game this year, hopefully it was the last one.

First, Austin Slater and Chris Shaw went back to back in the 4th. Slater's ball was crushed, but would not have been a homer in any major league stadium, but instead a double off the wall (maybe sneaks out of Boston or New York). Shaw's was a bomb though:

Jeff Arnold, Juniel Querecuto, and Slade Heathcott went back-to-back-to-back in the 9th. Then Shaw hit his second bomb of the day, which tied the game. Slade's second homer of the day was the final swing of the season to cap off a win in the 10th.

Hey, it was a shitty season for them but this is an exciting way for the kids to go out and maybe put some of that behind them.

I think Slater might jump on a plane to Arizona first and play in the AZL game tonight before joining the team. We'll see though, he's looked good with the bat so the Giants may just activate him.

Thank you to both @Stokes1931 and @SFGRTB for keeping us up to date on the farm throughout the year!

Have either of you heard why both Gustavo Cabrera and Johneshwy Fargas both ended the season on the suspended list?

:yo:

No I have not heard officially, but my best guess is that they broke team rules. If it was PED suspensions, we probably would have heard by now. It seems like Augusta was overall a mess, to be honest I think it would be fair to pin a lot of this on the coaching staff. Overall Augusta had quite a bit of talent, but there seemed to be a lot of issues behind the scenes. Carlos Valderrama was only in his 2 year managing (1st in the US), Eddie Taubensee is brand new to the Giants organization, Clay Rapada was with Augusta last year, and Ydwin Villegas spent the last 2 years coaching in San Jose.

I'm keeping my eye out though. For what it's worth, Fargas is a great person, not someone I'd expect to get into trouble. Maybe the fact that he was demoted to Augusta two years in a row, and the poor record this year just started to wear on him. Don't know about Cabrera.
