That's actually not too bad for the Kings. He'll play his way into that money for sure.

I get the same feeling with this deal as I did when the Flames signed Bouwmeester - that's vastly overpaying him.

I look at the cap hit and I understand a little. I think Kopitar has already earned his raise. It was a lot at the time but the Kings needed to make a statement. They now have made a commitment to the fans. they are going to do what it takes to build a long time contender.
Hear is a bit from Tim Lieweekly
“When you look at the commitments that we made this summer, when you add this to Mike Richards and his long-term deal, and Jack Johnson and the commitment we tied up there, and then going out and adding Simon Gagne, we spent more money this summer than in the history of this franchise. We always said, if we get close, we will come with our guns blazing, and we just blazed. I’m glad it’s done. I want our fans to understand that now, this is all about creating an environment to win the Cup, and that’s what Drew is going to help us do. We don’t look back. We only look forward now, and eight years is a good forward.”
i bolded that part for you stoners:hippie:

Let's see if he's the kind of player that will continue to play well and grow, or the type that got their check and relaxes.

Eight years is a big commitment, even for a young player. That Doughty was willing to give up so many UFA years (when he probably didn't have to) speaks to his desire to play in LA.

As was discussed here before, it seemed like Thursday or Friday would be the latest he could sign without reasonably missing the Europe trip and the start of the regular season. Assuming he did work hard in the off season and reports to the team in reasonable shape, it shouldn't set him back too much. He might get in for Saturday's exhibition in Las Vegas, as well as the Tuesday exhibition in Germany. Not sure if they will practice on Monday, but he will at least get practices in on Wednesday and Thursday before the Friday opener. Not ideal, but as we learned in this whole negotiation process, you can't get everything you want.

I don't think he'll sit on his ass for the next 8 years if that's what you're implying. I think he'll develop into a great defensemen for the Kings. PROBABLY the best that the Kings will have had in franchise history.
