Suh is gonna make things very uncomfortable for the Skins Sunday. This is a horrible match up IMO

Mike Jones...

Here are some key matchups for this contest:

● Washington RG Brandon Scherff vs. Miami DT Ndamukong Suh – Talk about trial by fire. The rookie will be charged with keeping the most ferocious defensive lineman in the NFL away from quarterback Kirk Cousins. Suh, who signed a six-year, $114.37 million contract this offseason, aims to kick off his Dolphins career with a dominant performance. Center Kory Lichtensteiger will likely try to help Scherff out. Right tackle Morgan Moses won’t be able to provide much assistance. He’ll have his hands full with defensive end Cameron Wake (11.5 sacks last season).

● Washington ILB Keenan Robinson vs. Miami RB Lamar Miller – In his first season as a starter, Robinson led the Redskins with 109 tackles. He aims to anchor the defense again while also becoming more of a force. Robinson and the Redskins will try to shut down Miller, who is coming off of a career year (1,099 yards, eight TDs), and make the Dolphins’ offense one-dimensional.

● Washington LT Trent Williams vs. Miami DE Olivier Vernon – Williams has proved his worth to the Redskins and earned a big pay day this preseason. Kirk Cousins’s blind-side protector wants to become even more dominant as he enters his sixth season. Williams receives a good test off the bat as he faces Vernon, who in the past two seasons has recorded 18 sacks.

● Washington RB Alfred Morris vs. Miami MLB Kelvin Sheppard – Redskins coaches plan on relying heavily on the ground game to ease pressure on Cousins while also trying to keep Miami’s pass rushers off balance. Morris is still “the bell cow,” Jay Gruden says. He’ll aim to kick off this contract year on a strong note while Sheppard & Co. aim to keep him in check and place more heat on Cousins.

● Washington FS Dashon Goldson vs. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill – Goldson came to town via trade this spring and immediately assumed a leadership role in the secondary. He’ll work to put his fellow defensive backs in position to make plays and while serving as the last line of defense himself. Goldson said the defensive backs will aim to confuse Tannehill by disguising coverages and giving him all kinds of diverse looks. Goldson said it’s important that the guys in the secondary receive a strong effort from their teammates up front, however. If Ryan Kerrigan & Co. can muster a strong pass rush, that could lead to mistakes out of Tannehill.

● Washington TE Jordan Reed vs. Miami SS Walt Aikens and FS Reshad Jones – Kirk Cousins traditionally does a good job of spreading the ball around, so Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson will likely see their fair number of touches. However, with a fierce pass rush on tap, look for Reed to serve as a valuable safety valve for his quarterback. Miami’s safeties will try to match up with Reed, but he has the size and speed advantage. Reed is under a lot of pressure with Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen out for the season. We’ll see how he responds.

If we can just run the football to put us in 3rd and short situations and convert those, I think we'll be ok. No 3rd and longs, don't fall behind early, and run some misdirection, play actions, and maybe a reverse or two. Anything to keep their front 7 guessing, off balance and on their heels.

Interesting 2nd point regarding Tannehill's propensity to throw Left.

More from Mike Jones...

Earlier this morning, we went over some of the key matchups in this contest. Now, here are five story lines to follow Sunday at FedEx Field.

  • The Kirk Cousins era – Gruden pulled the plug on the Robert Griffin III experiment and turned the keys to the offense over to Cousins. The coach believes that of all the quarterbacks, Cousins made the most progress from last year, and that the “giant leap” he observed in Cousins positions the fourth-year pro to best lead the team. Cousins has never had trouble moving the ball. The problem has been holding onto the ball. He has 18 touchdown passes, 19 interceptions and four lost fumbles. To hold on to the starting job, Cousins must prove that his work in the offseason has helped improve his decision-making and ball security woes. He also must show he can bounce back from adversity. Gruden said he doesn’t want Cousins going out there feeling like he has “the weight of the world” on his shoulders. Playing within the system will be key.
  • The debuts of Scherff and Moses – Cousins won’t have much of a chance to prove anything if he doesn’t have adequate protection. Rookie right guard and second-year right tackle Morgan Moses will face plenty of pressure in trying to fend off Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake. Scherff struggled mightily in the second week of the preseason, against Detroit, but he rebounded and had a solid game against Baltimore. Suh is next-level good, however, and Scherff can’t afford to make any grave errors. From a technique standpoint, Moses has improved significantly from his rookie season. But he still remains an unfinished product. This tandem must grow up in a hurry.
  • Kerrigan’s first action – Ryan Kerrigan is the only proven edge rusher on the roster, and the Redskins paid him accordingly, giving him a five-year, $57.5 million extension. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry will rely heavily on Kerrigan, and will move him all over the place, rather than just camping him out on the left side as has been the usual routine. But there’s a bit of the unknown involved here. Kerrigan had his left knee scoped in June, and per doctors’ orders, he didn’t take a single game snap during the preseason. The Redskins say they aren’t worried, but Kerrigan can slam the door on any doubts by getting off to a strong start.
  • Overhauled defense – Just as Kerrigan needs to set the tone for the defense, Washington’s coaches need the unit as a whole to shoulder the load while Cousins and his offensive teammates find their way. The defense features six new starters and a new coordinator. The line and secondary have experienced the most turnover, and we’ll see if those moves – the signings of Terrance Knighton, Stephen Paea, Ricky Jean Francois, Dashon Goldson and Chris Culliver – translate into a more aggressive, disruptive unit.
  • The Morris and Jones show – Cousins plays the most important position on the offense, but for now, Alfred Morris and Matt Jones lead the most important element. Coaches believe that the recipe for success involves a heavy dose of the run. They want the pair to punish opponents and crank out yards to put Cousins in manageable second and third downs. A healthy rushing attack will keep Suh, Wake & Co. from pinning back their ears and coming after Cousins. An effective run game will also set up the play-action attack and create opportunities for shots downfield.

Know Your Opponent: Washington Redskins vs Miami Dolphins
by EMMANUAL BENTON

The Washington Redskins will kickoff the 2015 regular season at home on Sunday, Sept. 13, as the team hosts the Miami Dolphins at FedExField. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Week 1 Scouting Report: Miami Dolphins

Offense:

  • QB Ryan Tannehill has improved each of his first three seasons. Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor has supplied Tannehill with a scheme that suits him best. The Dolphins do some read option, but you’ll see a lot of screens, passes to RBs and middle-of-the-field throws. Tannehill can be very efficient when comfortable. He’s also athletic and will take advantage of defenses with his feet.
  • RB Lamar Miller could be on the verge of having a big season. The Dolphins run what’s considered a “wide-zone scheme.” Miami stretches defenses out by pulling their guards and getting the RBs on the edge to turn up field. They have some good blocking WRs, including Jarvis Landry, who helps spring RBs loose. That’s really what helps make it all work. Miller has good speed and could present some problems in the passing game for Washington.
  • From film study, Jarvis Landry and TE Jordan Cameron could each present a major issue for the Redskins defense. Ideally Washington would place Chris Culliver on Landry, but it will probably be more so DeAngelo Hall. Not to mention, Jordan Cameron may see a lot of time vs Ryan Kerrigan or Trent Murphy. Those are not ideal match-ups. The great thing about Jarvis Landry is he can make plays from outside WR and slot. He’s also dynamic after-the-catch. Washington should prepare for the deep fade this week, because I have a feeling it’s coming. Miami likes to throw deep fades to Jarvis Landry from slot. They also showed in pre-season that they can move Jordan Cameron out to WR and throw deep fades to him matched vs a LB.
  • Washington’s DE Stephen Paea vs Dolphins rookie RG Jamil Douglas may be a sneaky significant match-up. I think Paea has a chance to make some noise in this game. He’s, in my opinion, the best defensive lineman on the team.
Defense:

  • Miami’s front seven gets a lot of hype and it’s without a doubt warranted. Their front seven is nasty. Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake are the stars of the bunch — they’ll get the first crack at Washington’s new RG/RT pairing. One thing Redskins rookie RG Brandon Scherff packs is an attitude. It’ll be nice to see him battle Suh, who many consider a dirty player. I fully expect Morgan Moses to win some and lose some against Wake, but his length could help him.
  • Miami’s weakness on defense is definitely their secondary. However, although Brent Grimes is getting long in the tooth, he’s still pretty good. This could be a big week for Redskins TE Jordan Reed. Miami hasn’t been good at covering TE’s.
More Notes:

  • It’s imperative that the Redskins don’t give LaMichael James any free lanes on punt and kick returns. He has game breaking ability.
  • Miami’s rookie WR DeVante Parker is finally healthy and I expect the Dolphins to use him a little more than many think. He was arguably the second best WR in this past draft and I’m sure they’re excited to use him. Where Parker could become handy is in the redzone, using his 6ft 3 frame to box out Washington’s DBs.

If nothing else, I fully expect the Skins to come out hitting and playing with emotion. The national media has told the Skins to their face that they are the worst team in the entire league. Vegas has made Jay the odds on favorite to be the first coach fired. This has got to lead to an "us against the world," mentality in that locker room. Whether that makes a difference, I don't know. I do expect them to play hard though with a massive chip on their shoulder

Sounds great until the first time Suh hits your QB. Then shit gets real. You might see RG3 tomorrow after all.
