I don't think anybody expects the crowd to do anything. The crowd just does it because a first down keeps the drive alive. Part of the live NFL experience is keeping the fans hyped. It has nothing to do with moral victories.

Is it warranted to celebrate winning the opening coin toss? I know most NFL teams do that as well. Or, according to you, is that considered a big play?

i disagree the PA is definitely setting the crowd up to do this....

I remember watching a game on TV last season (wish I could remember the home team...Redskins, maybe?) where the defense was up late and clearly in a prevent with a minute or so to play, and you could hear the PA announcer doing that "Another Redskin(?) first down!" I just had to laugh, but I suppose it so puns betrothed than "Another thirty seconds off the clock and we're still screwed."

I believe our PA announcer says "First Doooooowwwwnnn, Washington!" But it's not really a crowd playalong thing.
