If you look through the last few years of free agency, how many players that changed teams can you really say made an impact on any team? Looking through these, there seems to be very few. Peyton Manning of course is on the list. Wes Welker made an impact in Denver. But take a serious look at the last few years.

But you're right..... FA is often a shitshow with bad teams throwing money at guys that don't fit their roster.

So you are saying that Hobson makes good points with factual data to back it up?

we resigned Michael Johnson, it matters.

problem is, you can maybe patch a whole in the wall, in a short period of time, but to rebuild a house that's been hit by a truck, takes more time.

I can see Suh making a pretty decent impact for the Dolphins. Demarco Murray will make no impact for the Eagles. Revis will fit back into the Jets system. The Redskins will suck despite picking up Knighton. Matthews, Orakpo, Thomas, Vereen all have busts written on their foreheads for their new teams.

That one matters. Just as I think Revis will help the Jets back out. Those guys are going back to systems they know and fit in. Johnson may be a bust for a team like Tampa, but could be a solid pick up for Cincinnati.

On average FA doesn't help..... But there are plenty of examples of good franchises using it in appropriate ways and helping their team. The idea that it doesn't work at all is pushed by our team's mouthpiece as it fits our approach.

That was Seattle and New England. Now, let's rephrase the question, does FA really matter to a team like Cincinnati?

If Cincinnati signed Revis, he wouldn't have helped at all, because we still have Dalton.

You see what I am getting at? As long as we have Brown/Lewis/Dalton, sign whoever you want, it won't make a damn bit of difference, so no point in wasting the money on some expensive FA that is bound to fail the second he arrives.

Of course it matters. When used judiciously and properly. The Bengals choose not to participate. And their propaganda machine constantly puts out slanted data to justify the cheap approach they take.

But like Crash said, as long as the Big Three are in place, we will be stuck right where we are...

Mediocrity.

I disagree, but only to this point. It can be done with a mediocre QB and coach, but you have to have an amazing defense. Let's be honest, Billick and Dilfer both bad. Eli/Coughlin isn't exactly a great duo. However, they had absolutely dominant defenses. If we want a chance with Dalton/Marv that is what we have to do. FA is a good way to help with that. We don't need to sign Suh, but you have to find players to come in and make an impact in FA. Johnson was a good pickup, but it isn't enough.

I make the over/under for Hobspin picking up on this article and posting it on Bengals.com as another propaganda move exclaiming the Bengals as big winners in free agency at three days......

I actually give them high marks for FA this time -- Unpopular, I know.

But they picked up a needed DE that doesn't count against comp picks and they picked up a linebacker with tons of experience without counting against the comp picks. And they kept their best FA.
