Man, Martin got robbed and Pedro smoked one down the line, but right at Gonzalez. A little bit of bad luck there.

Hey what's the ruling on fan interference on homerun balls? When Martin hit that shot that looked like it was going to clear the fence by an inch or two - what would've happened if one of the fans actually had a pair of testicles and grabbed the ball before it got caught?

How would that be ruled? Assume the trajectory was clearly over the fence if the ball hadn't been caught.

I was wondering the same thing, actually...

I missed the game/play but if it was over the fence and the OF reached over the fence to catch it then it would have been an HR per paragraph two below under the Rule 3.16 Comment section.

3.16
When there is spectator interference with any thrown or batted ball, the ball shall be dead at the moment of interference and the umpire shall impose such penalties as in his opinion will nullify the act of interference.
APPROVED RULING: If spectator interference clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball, the umpire shall declare the batter out.

Rule 3.16 Comment: There is a difference between a ball which has been thrown or batted into the stands, touching a spectator thereby being out of play even though it rebounds onto the field and a spectator going onto the field or reaching over, under or through a barrier and touching a ball in play or touching or otherwise interfering with a player. In the latter case it is clearly intentional and shall be dealt with as intentional interference as in Rule 3.15. Batter and runners shall be placed where in the umpire’s judgment they would have been had the interference not occurred.
No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. However, should a spectator reach out on the playing field side of such fence, railing or rope, and plainly prevent the fielder from catching the ball, then the batsman should be called out for the spectator’s interference. Example: Runner on third base, one out and a batter hits a fly ball deep to the outfield (fair or foul). Spectator clearly interferes with the outfielder attempting to catch the fly ball. Umpire calls the batter out for spectator interference. Ball is dead at the time of the call. Umpire decides that because of the distance the ball was hit, the runner on third base would have scored after the catch if the fielder had caught the ball which was interfered with, therefore, the runner is permitted to score. This might not be the case if such fly ball was interfered with a short distance from home plate.

So question since I missed the game is Cole's lack of K's alarming or is it more of an instance where they will come with experience? Using a Manny Machado hitting scenario as an example. His HR power will come soon because a ton of his Doubles are super close to being HR's.

Ah yes. Thanks for the update. Indeed - there was no risk of screwing the team then. One of those fans should've gone for it. Worst case - you get escorted out of the ballgame late in the game and the play is scored exactly as it turned out to be scored. Best case - steal a win that might be crucial in September.

As for Cole. No. Don't be alarmed.

I haven't been able to watch every pitch but I've watched enough. He's not even trying for strikeouts. He gave Greinke a fastball to chase that one time and it worked. Then another time he painted the inside corner with a curve but the ump squeezed him when the batter took. He ended up having to throw another pitch on a full count - a 97 mph fastball at the knees - and that was the weakly hit ball that scored the first run against.

From my perspective he's pitching to contact to the exclusion of all else. He's (mostly) not allowing himself to be behind in the count and he's limiting his pitch count and making teams deal with him rather than the other way around. The best hitters will be able to take advantage of this sort of single-minded approach. You might note that the middle of the Dodgers' order were the only ones who did anything against him. Even so there were a few singles hit off of Cole that could've been outs on a different day.

I'm actually more impressed than I thought I'd be. He absolutely must find a way to miss more bats but I'll wait until I see him actually trying to set people up for it before I get worried.

cole rarely throws inside and keeps the ball low.
great at throwing strikes.
so people are just digging in and swinging away.
not mixing up speeds nuch yet.

to get more K's and be successful once they have a book on him, he will need to throw inside more and up in the zone. it is easier to catch up to 97-99 when it is low rather than high and/or tight.

altogether though, impressive outings, but doesnt get the K when he needs it.
not too many people making great contact, so some bleeders, but when you let everyone hit, you will give up a fair share of those also.

i think cause of the rain delay yesterday, he was 93-96 most of the game and rarely hit 97, 98

Thanks both of you for the info. I was interested since I missed the last start.
