Really DeSean Jackson? Day 1 of OTA's and your at the Cleveland-ATL game? Just disgusting and not what I would call a team guy. I know, I know, you guys will say he doesn't need to be there. Well, any team I root for or play on should have all participants from day 1. I'm not impressed with him at all....

The Washington Redskins' biggest playmaker, top offensive lineman and best pass-catching tight end all missed the first day of their organized team activity session Tuesday.

Receiver DeSean Jackson did not attend the workout -- and won't be in town for the final two sessions this week, having cleared his absence with the coaching staff. Coach Jay Gruden said Jackson would return next week. No reason was given for his absence.

Jackson was a regular participant in the OTA sessions last season, but had missed the first week of their offseason workouts (the Redskins started two weeks earlier than most teams because they had a first-year coach. And his vacation schedule was planned around his former team, Philadelphia).

Left tackle Trent Williams, coming off a Pro Bowl appearance, could not get a flight out of rain-savaged Houston.

Oft-injured tight end Jordan Reed missed the workout to get his knee examined after complaining of soreness. Reed has had a variety of ailments since the Redskins drafted him in 2013. Because of injuries, Reed played in 11 games last season and nine as a rookie.

Also, corner Tracy Porter missed the workout -- Gruden said he missed his flight as well. Corner DeAngelo Hall (Achilles) and tackle Morgan Moses (Lisfranc) were limited participants. And linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who underwent arthroscopic surgery last week, did not attend. He remains on crutches, but Gruden said he was fine and would return soon.

he cleared it with the staff

That's good info to read, thanks dad. I was all set to post how the DJax time bomb is starting to tick, and i totally believe it will happen sooner rather than later. But at least it does not appear to be the case in this instance.

good grief.......Skins2win... Was the first week of VOLUNTARY OTA's.... I understand your wanting 100% participation, as do I...but DJAK is the least of our worries.....He knows the playbook, and the coachs cant upcoach speed....you have it or you don't...and he has it......I'm glad he had informed the team of his plans prior..... What about Porter or Williams?? They missed their flights becasue they were cancelled...I guess they should Live in the DC area so this isn't an issue.....I mean a team guy would not risk the 1st OTA because of flights...They should be required to live in the area...right??

LOL!

Reality is we know DJax Goes to the beat of his own drummer. We knew this when we picked him up.

Is it the start of dissent after his 2 yr guaranteed $$$ is done? Perhaps. Who knows, but as long as he continues his on game day, stretch the field presence, who will ultimately care?

Yea you have to just accept DJax for what he is. Even if he isn't there he's easily our #1 playmaker.

I'm not aware of any problems DJax has caused during his stay here. That may change but certainly not because he didn't attend voluntary workouts. Chip Kelly's has made a lot of questionable moves....there's still a big hole in the Eagles offense since he left.

Say what you want, a REAL team guy would be there for his teammates. DJax has never been a team guy, he is a ME guy. I don't care if he is the best playmaker we have, don't want those type of players on the team, period! If your reasoning is good, then so be it. To attend a basketball game is not good enough reason for me if I'm the GM or coach. Just how I roll I guess.

And Lonewater, I said nothing about living in the area. Porter sucks and is now cut so I'm glad he didn't show. As for Williams, his reasoning was legit due to flight delays. I don't make excuses for anyone as I'm not an excuse maker. Be there for your team or find another profession that allows you to take time away. For goodness sakes, the guys has had a whole off season to goof off and have fun don't you think...

Not sure if you were around then, but I guess with your take you would have hated players like John Riggins & Dexter Manley. Neither were what you would consider great practice guys or there for all activities. However - both made huge contributions. Granted - later in his career Manley did some things that crossed the line & perhaps would have missed a lot more games in today's era but I would take either any day of the week.

I understand your premise. However - you have to be a bit flexible with certain players if they don't go too far & I see nothing from Jackson at this time to indicate that he will be a problem child w/ the Redskins (could always change). For starters - I don't recall Jackson complaining once last season in spite of the bad record, poor QB play, etc. That has to count for something.

he got it cleared from the HC and staff . not sure this is a big deal and gruden reiterated it today and DJAX certainly didnt do anything to hide his whereabouts

my take if the coaches dont think its an issue and his teammates arent griping about it , then its a non issue

you beat me to it . look skinz2winz could have a point but, jason reid has an ax to grind with snyder and the skins .

look if the staff said its ok then where is the issue

what reid is saying is SM doesnt mean nothing

Something tells me that most folks are going to get bored with this stuff real soon & then ESPN might throw him away just like the radio station. This guy needs to let things go at the risk of ruining whatever career he has left. He should follow the lead of Mike Wise who appears to surprisingly do a good job with his ESPN articles.

This is a BIG deal in as much as an organizational perception can be, from a team perspective......MEH!!
Dad s correct in that he got prior approval, the problem is he got prior approval.

What no one has written thus far on this thread is about the underlying reason that makes this an irritant to them, but here it is. Clearly the team is being rebuilt in a manner that gives any and all interested parties reason to consider them, contrary to almost the entirety of the last 15 years, serious players on the field. Although the team is not there yet, it does take time. What, on the other hand, is the organization doing to erase the legacies of such notable free agent signees like D. Sanders, A. Haynesworth et.al?

The perception still lingers that if you want to get paid and not have to make a professional effort sign with DC. Ardent followers of this team will object to that characterization, that's because we like the SM led new approach and see the changes as positive. Unfortunately, NFL fans and fans of other teams who occasionally are called upon to see what's happening here, are done so when a story or stories like this one surfaces. Is it any wonder that there is still a belief that certain players get privileges not afforded others? Really?

This is what so many find objectionable in this case. Sure we can blame Jackson but for what.......not volunteering for a voluntary event? That's the easy way out. This organization has to learn that no one tak es you seriously unless and until they are in control of possible bad publicity. They must have known that excusing Jackson to attend a BB game in Cleveland could be seen as more of the same......Right?

Any time you find yourself agreeing with Jason Reid it may be time to reconsider your position.

Certainly not trying to start drama, it's a simple culture change that we have needed in DC for years. Now, with his supposed "free pass" to do whatever he wants while his teammates bust their tales to prepare for another season, don't you think for just a minute this is the perception that McCloughan & Co want to change? Let's face it, Gruden is in year 2 and with decisions like this one, he won't be around much longer walking around the Redskins head quarters with no back bone. Don't think for a minute that players such as Ryan Kerrigan, Alfred Morris or RG3 for that matter would miss an OTA without a personal reason. This reflects poorly on DJax, the head coach and the organization for allowing this kind of latitude. I can only imagine what the players who attend the OTA's are saying among themselves.
