Sather unloaded the big bucks that day in 2007 because he thought he could cripple both Buffalo (Drury) and New Jersey (Gomez). There was enough parity in the East that it might have paid off if Gomez had played like he did in 2005-06 and if Drury had continued to be as clutch as he was in Colorado and Buffalo.

But in a lot of ways, the New York Rangers just hate money.

Indeed they do.

The writer has a point. However much of the last year, when healthy, he has not been very good. When he came back from his first injury this year and got hurt again it didn't help him that the team started playing better for a short time.

Since his recent return he has been playing well. No one is going to take him in a trade so if he can play decently I prefer keeping him to buying him out or sending him down. He is one of the few veteran players the Habs have that have won in the past and who is not afraid to speak his mind.

(there was a whole Gomez hates PK melodrama that unfolded last year because Gomez wasn't giddy about an OT win after they blew a four goal lead)

Interesting when Gomez, Drury and Briere all signed I think everyone knew outside of NY and Philadelphia (probably they knew also) that they were all overpaid. At that time they were the big 3 FA's.

But history does repeat itself last year when all the D-men were FA's and how overpaid most of them got.

I love those sorts of stats. And they do tell an important story.

Gomez is hugely overpaid. But on a $3.5 million cap hit, he'd be fair value, and probably a well-liked and well-regarded player.

At least Scott did his part today and didn't score. Tomorrow's game is going to be epic.
