You can't compare stats from different eras. Gale Sayers was a great as a RB. Hester is not the undisputed GOAT KR you make him out to be. Not by a long shot.

Not comparing stats... If you read what I posted I used Sayers stats as a premise to support my argument. I also find it interesting that I cannot "use" stats from different eras... Hmmm, 1965-1971 Sayers only produced 4956 yards. Not very stellar, even compared to RBs in his time.

And yes, I do think Hester is the best return man of all time. It is my opinion, just like your opinion that he is not.

And?

Besides, if Hester was a Patriot we would probably have opposing arguments. But in the end, what does it matter? I find this thread laughable. Like our discussion will have any impact on his possibility that he gets a HoF shot or not... :omg:

I do not allow homerism to decide my interests. You are claiming you do and that claim matches your claims about Hester.

Miles and miles and miles above Hester. It's not even close to a comparison.

No way in hell Hester should get in. I was just trying to point out the HOF already have players in that make it kind of meaningless.

Someone stating that a player does or does not make the HoF based upon stats alone doesn't know football.

What did Gayle Sayers bring to the table that say a player like Billy Sims didn't that got him in the hall and keeps a player with better stats in a tougher era out? Head to head with Billy Sims who also had his career shortened by a knee injury.

Sims 60 games played 5,106 rushing yards 2,072 receiving 47 scores vs. Sayers 68 games played 4,956 rushing yards 1,307 receiving yards and 48 scores.

Gale Sayers career rushing stats:

4956 yards rushing
39 TDs

Hardly stellar compared to RBs today... But would any of you dare say he doesn't belong in the HoF? I am not comparing Sayers to Hester by any means, but the HoF is full of players who just don't have the stats on their side. Someone stating that a player does or does not make the HoF based upon stats alone doesn't know football.

Maybe you guys are right and Hester does not make the HoF. Doesn't change the price of rice in China, so who cares. All I'm saying is that he is the best return man in NFL history, including Mitchell. If Hester doesn't deserve to get in, then no ST player does.

Well for Sayers.....it was more of the timing for him...the HOF was relatively new, and lets face it....short career, but he helped changed the game.

Hester better then Mitchell......at this point of his career...Um No.....Sure he may instill more fear in his opponents then Mitchell did...I will grant you that...but with Hester, a 6yr career doesnt dominate the numbers Mitchell put up....He has basically the same career kickoff average and less then 2 yards more on his punt reurns with 1 more TD then Mitchell had.......Mitchell did it for 14 years....Lets see him do it that long ...then try to put him in the conversation as the best ever....

Actually - if Hester were on the Pats his chances would be much greater since the Pats have been to many SBs & you would have to think that they have a good shot to possibly obtain another championship in the relatively near future.

Cmon - step away from being a fan for a few minutes & look at this objectively. Again - HOF slots are hard to come by at this time - much harder than the example of Sayers that you brought up since there were way fewer candidates at that time. Oh well - you are right - we have no impact on any of this - pretty much just like every topic discussed on this forum.

IF at the end of his career he winds up owning all the TD records for return men, would you then consider him the greatest returner of all time and put him in the HoF? Or will it require other stats like ave yards per return?

Ray Guy should have been put into the HoF considering he's arguably the greatest punter of all time... Shouldn't the GoaT at a meaningful position mean something?

If he smashed the return records to the tune of 30-40 return TDs, he still wouldn't belong in canton without reasonable production at a skill position.

I disagree, when a single player changes a game plan because he is simply on the field, playing his position, then he should be in consideration for the HoF.

From Wikipedia regarding the HOF voting:

The small number of candidates elected each year has helped foster what some perceive as an inequality of representation at certain positions or in certain categories of player, with defensive players in general and defensive backs and outside linebackers in particular, special teams players, wide receivers, deserving players who primarily played on bad teams, and those from the "seniors" category, being slighted.

This points out that special teams players operate at a severe disadvantage. Keep in mind the voting is by a small group of writers (some of whom I would not allow to vote for a pee-wee all-star team) who probably only pay attention to certain positions & players. Therefore - barring major future accomplishments by Hester - I would not hold my breath on this one.

His position was WR. And he doesn't change the gameplan. He changes the approach to a handful of special teams plays.

I am a Bears fan and I would say that it will be VERY VERY difficult for Hester to make the HOF.

His greatness of being a return man was from 2006 through 2011. That was a 6 year span where he had 18 return touchdowns is awesome but 6 years is not a long enough time.

IF and ONLY IF he has another 6 years duplicated and he gets in the mid 30s for career return touchdowns, he will be considered for the HOF. This will be because he would have done this for an entire HOF length career. All HOF players are great for over 10 years will very few exceptions. But it would be almost impossible for him to get those same stats again. Coaches are just too good to allow it to happen again to the same player even if he was to remain just as good as before.

50% of the return game is basically null and void now with kickers routinely booting it into the end zone. A lot of punters are getting VERY good at booming the ball as well or directional kicking. It was a little different when at least 50% of the kickoffs were being returned but now it's like 10-15%.

Even Seattle's kicker Hauschka (I watch Seattle, just what I observe mostly) who was a horribly weak kicker all last year (horrible > 50 yard percentage, didn't get much into the end zone) was BOOMING them in pre-season. It's obviously he spent his time in the gym doing leg strengthening and/or steroids.

Now that is funny. Can't argue logic, you go to semantics. When that fails, you go to personal insult. I am a bigger man than you, literally and figuratively, so I will play along (and please don't try to argue this point... unless you are over 6'10" and 400lbs, just don't go there). I have read your posts... You are just as big a homer as the rest of us. The fact that you are on this message board in the first place quantifies your definition. At least I can recognize it.

Like I said before, your opinion is that Hester is not a HoF player. My opinion is that he is. And?

and he's on the field "changing the gameplan" for what about 50 plays over an entire season?

Please point out somewhere on a main board or anywhere but the New England board where there has been a New England slant to my posts.
