Apparent the nhl has updated the kicking the puck rule stating it is ok to kick a puck in as long as it hits an opposing player.Am I the only one who thinks it should be unjustified to kick a puck in regardless .Why encourage kicking the puck at all .

Hmm... Well if SOCCY would bring the fans out in Glendale I think Bettman would approve.

Was a garbage goal. Anytime kicking is involved there is no definitive answer, it's basically how the ref or guys in Toronto are feeling that night.

Does that include the goalie? That is kinda strange.

At the same time, why not just allowing kicking? I just mean that in the abstract it seems silly since you can pass and what not with your foot and you can score if it hits you in the chest or the leg by accident. But not if you skillfully do it on purpose? I'm not saying I'm for it or against it, just thinking out loud... or onto paper... or binary code... or whatever.

Does kicking really give a guy much of an advantage? I can't imagine many players will put a whole lot of velocity on the puck that way...

The last thing the NHL needs is multiple guys wildly kicking at a loose puck in the crease.

No, it doesn't. I understand why you would want to keep guys from grabbing in their hand and tossing it in the net. But using your stick is more advantageous in the vast majority of shots. I'm just trying to noodle why they are not allowed in the first place. Because a goal has to come off a stick? No, we allow all kinds of other deflections. In which case, it seems a bit odd that if it's accidental, it's okay. But if it's intentional/skillful, it is disallowed.

Safety issue. That's a fair point. Though I'm not sure a bunch of guys whacking their sticks in the crease is really safe either. But the follow through on a kick could be dangerous. Excellent argument.

Multiple puncture wounds in the goalie... I could just see it now. Have a friggin kick circle going in the crease.

I'm gonna try to dig up an old Burnside article where he was advocating players being allowed to throw the puck into the net...

Rule was apparently updated yesterday no goal if it hits the goales stick or goes straight in but goals are good if kicked in of a defensemen or forward either way I think kicking is dangerous and takes away from the skill involved in scoring a goal.In the past week the devils have had some odd scenerios for and against them had the kicked in goal last night,a goal called back for a foot in the crease Fuck Dallas and a shorthanded goal by Elias who was supposed to be in the box for a high sticking major.Sykora went in the box instead and the refs didn't notice :L

I agree with you, but...
(1) Goals that lack skill are scored pretty much every game. Weird bounces, deflections, etc. That's just part of hockey.
(2) I doubt players are going to focus energy on trying to kick a deflection off another player. That would be a waste of time. I think this is just a rule for exceptional circumstances that will rarely occur.
