I just thought he is pressing to finish top 10 in another statistical category.
Directions: Should the sappy and sycophantic musings of Kay, Waldman, Sterling, Francesa, et al regarding the impending retirement of Derek Jeter induce vomiting, open bag rapidly and insert stomach contents.
WARNING! Repeated exposure to video clips of Jeter’s last 2 truly great plays may cause nausea and vomiting (“the flip” vs Oakland in 2001 and “the dive” vs Boston 2004 – note the years)
Should vomiting occur for more than 4 hours, please console yourself with the thought that were it not for the Alex Rodriguez stellar/drug enhanced performances in the 2009 postseason, “The Captain” would be 14 seasons removed from his last WS Crown
Avoid pink Jeter jerseys, YES network flashbacks and Mariano Rivera retirement ceremonies, and references to Jeter being the first ever unanimous Hall of Fame selection.

"Joe, we're watching one of the best hitters of our generation." - McCarver
What does this say when Jeter is top 10 best ave hitters of this generation and still strikeouts at the clip he does?
I had no idea he was so high on this list. I also thought Kingman was higher up on the list.
I didn't even realize he was 18th all-time in plate appearances.

that batting average doesnt mean much?
This thread is great fun, but we need to remember counting stats favor players that are in the league for a long time... To truly measure a players career, you need to examine the rate stats....
Jeter clearly has plenty of hits and his BA is .312 which is good for 84th all time. More adept statisticians will examine his career OBP and see he is 162nd all-time at .381 - still excellent. To determine the value of his OPB, some will glance at his .826 OPS and realize he is still 265th all-time.
When it is all said and done, most people will have him as a top ten short-stop of all time. Just to be mentioned with Joe Cronin, Robin Yount, Arky Vaughn, Cal Ripken, Luke Apling, Alex Rodriguez and Lou Boudreau - is a good thing.
Even over all, many people will have him in the top 100 players of all time. He was that good...
The gay community should be very proud.
Now, back to counting his Ks....
