Defense?

Had a great 1st quarter. But man have they looked atrocious since. Carolina's offense is pretty bad. Missing their best player and they are driving down our throats. Not sure what the Pats can do to make it better.

Ya, it's pretty bad. Not sure what changed so dramatically from last year but it's hard to envision this team being there at the end this year without some major overhaul. They simply can't get off the field. Granted, they've made two turn overs but the Carolina punter has not played yet today.

And I hate being so negative about the defense. I wished I could say something positive. The turnovers are great. Especially the caused fumble when the Panthers were well on their way to another touchdown. But the Panthers are a bad offense. And they look great. Need some stops. Need some protection for Brady to establish a drive and give the defense a break.

I think you need to go back decades to find a worse Patriots defense. There's no fixing this IMO, just a horrible collection of talent on the front seven... and huge meltdowns in coverage. Just bad, very bad.

Someone's going to wake up a Cleveland Brown tomorrow.

Never saw a defensive holding call on a running play(Chung)... and the two very tick/tack calls in two crucial situations on Gilmore.

The refs definitely were more involved than I would like. This defense is bad enough, it's doesn't need any help.

Thank god I didn't get the game out here in Ohio. The way the Pats defense is playing now, even making the playoffs is questionable. They are making every team they play look like SB champs. Speaking of the Super Bowl, I noticed Buffalo knocked off Atlanta and is now in first place in AFC East. It is becoming more and more obvious that BB doesn't have a winning defense with the players currently on the roster. A trade before the October 31 deadline may be the only hope. Need something to light a fire under the D. Also, what's up with Gilmore? He was supposed to be an All-Pro corner back (at least he is certainly being paid like one). I'm not looking forward to seeing how we cope with another mobile QB (Winston) on Thursday. I'll bet he's licking his chops right now.

Blame it on the cockyness of Belichick - thought he can coach-up a bunch of scrubs. His evaluation of CBs leaves much to be desired (Draft/Gilmore). With Butler probably leaving and being shackled with Gilmore's horrid contract, they will again be fielding a bunch of misfits at CB next year. Get used to crap defense for quite some time, it's going to take years to rebuild.

Was Gilmore really that bad with the Bills? Unless he suddenly finds his game, I would opt to cut him right now and take the cap hit. I doubt if anyone will trade for him. Maybe that's why BB has so many defensive backs on the practice squad. I know BB had both Datone Jones and Lamarr Houston in for a tryout. They are both coming off injuries but I don't know how serious they are. This is shaping up as a long and disappointing season.

True on the Chung penalty. Bad call. The Gilmore one was ticky tacky. But damn it, keep your hands away from his head. Brady was able to overcome all the mistakes to tie it up. But Gilmores was a dagger in the heart of a struggling defense that did step up on that final drive.

Bills "Genius " status will definitely be put to the test for the remainder of the season. He certainly doesn't have the personnel to have a good defense. Hopefully he can devise a scheme.

AS Bill Parcells once said, "You are what you are.......

What is insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and over and expecting a different result. Gilmore.....hands to the facemask not once but twice on third downs. The second was the game loser. Newton gets sacked and the Panthers have to punt. Brady gets them to the 35 and Gostkowski kicks a 5o yarder for the win. Instead, 5 yard penalty, automatic first down, Carolin2 kicks the FG and wins 33-30.

Secondary has allowed all four QBs to throw for more than 300 yards.
Defense has allowed all four teams to score 30 or more.

Can you say 8-8 and no chance for the playoffs? At least they'll draft in the top 15 in 2018.

I certainly didn't expect the 85' Bears defense this year. But I'm literally in shock with how bad they are playing. Our DB's we're going to be our strength.

Gilmore/Rowe were struggling with the pass-off when receivers were in motion... not sure how much of it was Gilmore or Rowe.
Carolina was all over it (I suppose it's out there on film) and took full advantage. Looking back at a few plays, it looks like Carolina was trying to snap the ball right at the point where they were passing off responsibilities on the man in motion. If so, pretty effective gameplanning on Carolina's part.

Expect plenty of motion plays to Gilmore's side Thursday.
