The staff should always look to improve. We could use an upgrade there behind Allen & Payne beside Mathis should one of our starters goes down with injury. Happens every year that the lack of sufficient depth will haunt you. With better depth, Allen & Payne could rest a few snaps during games because the drop off is not great. Should Always be looking for better depth.

True but it's not a main concern going into camp.

How do you jump from saying we need depth to worried ? Ionman played in all 16 games last yr including 6 starts . Wise is at least 2 steps down from Ionman and a step down from settle easily

Ionman didn't do well at all last year my bad he did play 16 but not 17. lol. We play 17 games now. Who cares if Wise is a step down, he is the 4th DT.

you dont look to get worse dean , one injury and he is the 3 and has to carry more snaps

minor issue. More pressing issues facing this team than 4DT.

the statement has nothing to do with that . the fact is we bled talent there and we certainly could have retained one of them

This post is directed at the thread title and nothing else.

The defense will bounce back this year if seasonal patterns hold. They won't be top ten unit, but will settle in somewhere between 12th and 16th. A lot of folks haven't realized their 7th place ranking last year against the run.

That said, the pattern for this organization has been one in which general expectations have not matched output. Take a look at this team and you'll find that for several years now, when there are expectations that the offense will be the better unit, it's the defense that steps up, accordingly, when the expectation is for good defense, the offense becomes the better unit.

This thread suggests a defensive weakness, but again, if patterns hold, the better unit in 2022 will be our defense.
