How is it STILL NOT a standard practice for DCs at every level to tell their Defenders before going out to the field at the end of the game:
"Hey! We have the lead. In case of a turnover, just fall where you stand and protect the ball!"

Why in the world do I still see defenders trying to run with the ball [even out of the end zone] after a turnover when they have the lead at the ends of games???

or when the offense is on the 5 yard line and gives up an interception or fumble into the endzone, and the defense runs it out and gets tackled on the 2 yard line.

it really is amazing

or 4th down, offense throws a deep ball that's picked off and defender gets tackled-effectively making it a punt

just bat it down

You will eventually get the tough guy standard respond....

"its instinct. Did you ever play the game? Probably not. When I played......."

The message board community has literally 99.99% posters who were apparently all-state, all-district, all-conference, and all-pro former players.

Instinct or Not, it is a dumb play and SELFISH.

Not to be selfish or bragging, but I averaged 25+ yards per interception return in high school. Made all-state that year and never looked back. LOL

JK, I don't understand it either. Just fall on the ball and BAM, game over.

defenders don't get a chance to run with the ball or score very often, so they probably just overcome with excitement

I do remember playing against Nebraska in 2005 during their homecoming... we threw a pick in the redzone at the end of the game, and their player tried to return it and fumbled... we threw a touchdown like 2 plays later to win the game :laugh3: @ blackshirts

Highschool and even college kids are still kids. Yes the smart thing to help your team is to knock the ball down, but you bat the ball down and the play is over. You pick off the pass and you get your name in the paper for pulling in and INT, you try and run it out you get return yards.

As stats get bigger and bigger I'm sure you'll see more kids doing things like this that hurt their team but help their personal stats.

I think it's instinct. When a ball is thrown to you, the instinct is to catch it. When the ball is rolling around on the ground, the instinct is to pick it up.

I agree that the "smart" play is to knock the ball down or just fall on it, but in the heat of the moment, instincts can take over.

Exactly. If you are in that situation, you actually need to mentally remind yourself...bat it down...bat it down...bat it down.

But, it's like being in front of a hot chick with a huge rack. You keep telling yourself "don't stare at her tits. Don't stare at her tits." Then you realize, you are staring at her tits.

Instinct is tough to turn off.
